MILESTONE RELEASES ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLATION
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Milestone recently completed the Environmental Product Declaration
(EPD) development process for the porcelain flooring products manufactured at the company’s
North American production facilities.
The 15-page report is a comprehensive disclosure of the environmental impacts of Milestone’s
porcelain tile products. A Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) was conducted based on the line of 20
porcelain tile products offered by Milestone, with the results being validated by an independent
third party and disclosed in the form of an EPD. Technical expertise and software were provided
by WAP Sustainability, while third party validation was provided by global public health
organization NSF International.
“The preparation of the Environmental Product Declaration along with the supporting Life Cycle
Analysis gave opportunity for Florim to identify environmental and other impacts throughout the
supply chain and manufacturing process,” Don Haynes, Environmental, Health, Safety, and ISO
Manager for Florim USA, said. “Additionally, opportunities for improvement in our environmental
footprint have been identified and several are currently undergoing further analysis to determine
their feasibility and potential implementation.”
An EPD is a comprehensive report that discloses the ways a product impacts the environment
during its life cycle. The equivalent of a “nutrition label” for a product’s sustainability impact, an
EPD offers a snapshot of a product’s cradle to grave effects on the atmosphere, water and
earth. The EPD process benefits both specifiers and purchasers by offering an objective,
transparent evaluation of a product as they look to understand the environmental footprint of
their building products.
“Milestone chooses to be able to encourage the use of products and materials for which life-
cycle information is available and that have environmentally, economically and socially
preferable life-cycle impacts,” Haynes said. “We support project teams in selecting products
from manufacturers who have a verified environmental life-cycle analysis.”
