“Ok Clive – stop talking! Questions?”
Editor's Notes
State the key to good career planning is having a high level of self-awareness
That means – having a good idea of what you strengths and weaknesses are, your likes and dislikes, your interests and motivations are – these are important as ideally they should match with the career you are interested in choosing
For example someone wanting to be a Nurse would not make a good Nurse if they personally did not like needles, did not like the sight of blood, and did not like people!
Another example is someone who says they want to be a Teacher but then they say they are not confident in talking in front of other people, and they are not really keen on studying Maths and English themselves, and they don’t like children!
Most careers will require particular strengths so it is important to work out what yours are BEFORE you start to choose career pathways
OCCUPATIONAL Awareness I about having a very clear idea of what different occupations involve e.g. exactly what does an Accountant do? What does a Mechanic or an Engineer do? What does a Social Worker do? What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist? It is very important to research those details to find out if the day to day tasks and duties would be of interest to you. it is also important for you to know what the career pathway is for a particular job and how long that career pathway might take e.g. it will take at least six years to become a Psychologist, four years to become an Engineer, three years to become a Nurse.
Once you have that level of self awareness and a good level of occupational awareness it will be so much easier to choose your career pathways
How to think about your career:
Know yourself and the key influences on your career choices and decisions
Research & evaluate your options
Choose a direction, set goals, create and action plan
Identify potential barriers and build in contingency plans
Regularly monitor, review, and adjust if required
Maintain flexibility and openness
Similar to the other groups:
Realistic – nature/recreation/ practical/mechanical
Investigative – analytic/scientific
Artistic – creative/artistic
Social – Helping/advising
Enterprising – persuading/service
Conventional – organising/clerical
