3. The consumption of virtual images in the society of the spectacle and digital
technologies, is accompanied by a scientific logic of what, Prof. Landolfi calls
"the governmentalization of the emotions." This seminar seeks to uncover
the social process through which emotions are manipulated on a mass-scale.
Think of a 'talent shows' and/or 'reality shows'. What is really going on here
behind this great apparatus? It is an apparatus of power-knowledge that both
controls the emotional reactions of the public, AND offers the stage on which
the consenting participants express themselves. The ambivalence of the
governmental apparatus of the emotions, which finds in psychoanalysis and
in the biosciences its epistemological foundation is manifested in political
institutions (paradigms of ‘glory and acclamation’), as well as in education.
This course aims to retrace the conceptual steps through which this process
takes place so that serious reflection can take hold. This course will provide a
methodology to enhance our awareness of the ways in which our desires and
our emotions are normativized, with particular attention to the 'judgmental'
and internalized model of the emotion.
