1. 4th Grade PE lesson
Properly Throwing and Catching
Objectives:
1. Students will demonstrate muscular endurance and flexibility through a variety of warm-up
exercises.
2. Students will be able to demonstrate proper over-hand throwing technique with various size
balls, using proper follow-through.
3. Students will be able to demonstrate proper catching technique while both partners move closer
and further apart from one another.
Materials:
1. Gymnasium Activity Area
2. Bean bags (1 for each pair of students)
3. Tennis balls (1 for each pair of students)

Time Activity Objectives CA standards Materials
10:00 – 10:03 (3) Introductory Activity 1 4 - 3.1 1, 5
Skipping and Galloping: The class will skip for one and half minutes around the edge of the
basketball courts and then will gallop for one and half additional minutes after that.
10:03 – 10:13 (10) Fitness Activity 1 4 - 3.4, 3.6 1, 6
Flexibility (students will count aloud to fifteen, along with the teacher, for each side before
switching)
Arms (arm circles, stretching across chest, and behind back)
Flamingo Hamstring Stretch
Side lunges
Cherry Pickers
Calves (toes raises)
Jumping Jacks (30 as a class, counting aloud once again)
High Knees (for 1 minute; the teacher will encourage them by telling them to act like soccer players
and they cannot drop the ball they are juggling on their knees)
Muscular Endurance (during this time, the teacher will encourage the students and remind them of
how this will help them in life)
Sit-ups with partner holding feet (as many as the students can do within a minute and then
switch roles)
Push-ups (as many as the students can do within a minute)
10:13 – 10:25 (12) Lesson Focus Activity 2, 3 4 - 1.7, 1.9 1,2,3,4,5
Have students be in two rows both facing the front while teachers discuss and demonstrate proper
throwing and catching techniques.
2. Throwing: Teacher will explain and demonstrate the proper throwing technique (T-L-Point-Step-
Throw), discuss following-through. Students will then proceed to practice this technique three times
without anything in their hands (just practicing the motion).
Catching: Teacher will explain to students the proper way to catch (with hands in front of them, feet
shoulder width apart, and knees slightly bent) and to be ready for whatever direction the ball may
go. Once again, the students will practice this three times without anything in their hands to ensure
they have the correct motion.
The front row of students will then turn around to find their partner (the student standing across
from them). Make sure students are still spread out (evenly). The teacher will then pass out the
bean bags to the first row (one per pair). At the teacher’s instruction, Row 1 will then throw to their
partner in Row 2. Once everyone has thrown, the teacher will then signify that Row 2 students
should then throw the ball back to the first row. This pattern should continue for two minutes.
Teacher will monitor students as they continue to throw and catch the bean bag to give proper
feedback (both corrective and positive)
Practicing with various sizes: have students switch to tennis balls after 3 minutes, having them
practice the same drill as they did with the bean bags. Students will then practice the same
technique this time with tennis balls for the next 3 minutes. Teacher will continue to monitor and
give feedback as needed.
Teaching points – follow through, T-L-Point-Step-Throw, brace for the catch, feet shoulder width
apart
10:25 – 10:30 (5) Game Activity 2, 3 4 - 1.6, 1.7, 1.9 1, 3, 5
Have students stay paired up. Students will start out about 2-3 steps away from each other. Each
pair will continue to throw the tennis ball, taking a step back each time. Once someone drops the
tennis ball, that pair is out of the game and stands off to the side of the court. After about minute,
the teacher should instruct those students who are still in the game (those who have not yet
dropped the ball) to no longer move back, but only one step to either side in order to catch the ball.
After another minute, instruct the remaining students that they can only pivot on one foot to catch
the ball (no other movement allowed). The game should continue until only one pair remains and
they are the winners.
