3. Choose Light Source Position
• Light source (moon) should not appear
on the art work
• If light source is on the work, light will
be shining in your eyes and blind you
• Choose light source to come from left or
right side for shadow effects
4. Sketch Idea
* Barely touch paper with medium to
make the least visible line possible
* Sketch outlines of main objects
* Check the size and position of
objects for correct proportion &
depth (distance)
5. Background First
• The weak moonlight cannot travel great
distances
• The background is the farthest away & will
reflect the smallest amount of light so use
the least amount of medium
9. Foreground Last
• The brightest light reflects from the
foreground
• Objects in the foreground are drawn last
because they require the most amount of
chalk on the paper
• Foreground is usually at the bottom of work
& will be smeared if not applied last
