CHAPTER 5
WHO ARE
YOU ??
MATERI LINTAS MINAT
Noun phrases are phrases that consist of
nouns and modifiers. Modifiers can be
articles, quantitative modifiers or
adjectives, Sometimes, a noun is
modified by two or more adjective. In this
case, we have to know the rules to put
the adjective in order. In this unit, we will
learn how to construct good noun
phrases.
REMEMBER !!
Adjective / noun
A word that describe a noun.
‘Big’, ‘boring’, ‘purple’, ‘quick’, and ‘obvious’ are all
adjective.
A famous Indonesia footballer from Semarang,
Central Java.
The shortest-serving Indonesia President after
Independence.
Preposition / noun
In grammer, a word which is used before a noun or a
noun phrase, connecting it to another word.
We jumped in to a deep lake
She drove slowly down the long track
The first female President of Indonesian after
Indonesian indepedence
Determiner / noun
In grammer, a word which is used before a
noun to show which particular examples of the
noun you are referring to.
In the phrases ‘ my first boyfriend ’ and ‘ that
strange woman ’, the words ‘my’ and ‘that’ are
determiners

Hongkong Institute of Hotel
Management

CULTURAL
AWERENESS
The Order of Adjective in a Noun
Phrase
In a noun phrase, the adjective/adjectives will always
appear in front of a noun, and the noun will similary
appear after the adjective/adjectives or at the end of
the noun phrase.
See the following examples :
The pattern of English noun phrase
A famous Indonesian football Player
The pattern of Indonesian noun phrase
pemain Sepak bola Indonesia terkenal
From the examples above, we learn that sometimes we
use more than one adjective to describe something. We
can use both fact adjectives and opinion adjectives.
Opinion adjectives go before fact ajectives.
See the examples :
determiner opinion
Fact
size age shape color origin
Material/
kind
purpose noun
A Strong Electric machine
A Wide geographic Area
A Smart Operator
A cordless Telephone
An Expensif red Drees
A nice small old round yellow German wooden dining Table
Preposition
Preposition comes from words ‘Pre’ and ‘Position’. Pre
means before; and Position means located at. Thus
the initial meaning of preposition is ‘located before’.
According to Cambridge Advance Learner’s
Dictionary, preposition is a word which is used before
a noun, or a noun phrase connecting it to another
what. In this chapter you will learn prepositions that
are placed before nouns or noun phrases.
Preposition Noun Noun phrase
From Parepare, South Sulawesi
In The beautiful big garden
About Letter ‘K’
Of The most outstanding artists
Etc.
Study the following pattern.
Determiner
In Indonesian language, a, an, the, this, that, and these are called “kata
sandang”. They can be used to notify a noun. Study the following examples :
 ‘the’, ‘this’, ‘that’, to notify definite articles
 ‘a’, ‘an’, to notify indefinite articles
 Articles ‘a’ and ‘an’ are not used to notify something in general
