By Charlotte BrackenME AND MY MOVIES:ADVENTURE FILMS
ADVENTURE FILMSAdventure Films are the type of films which often use their action scenes toboth display and explore many different kinds of exotic locations in a veryenergetic way. For example, films such as Brave (2012) is a film which isanimated focuses on a young girl doing something out of the ordinary. It isan exciting undertaking involving risk and physical danger, forms the mainstoryline focusing on the main protagonist and making the film basedaround her and everything she does from the choices and actions. There arealways many different locations within each different adventure film thatlooks so realistic and makes you just want to go there and explore thesurroundings. Even though you know it doesn’t exist, it still makes youwonder what if and that drags me into the film even more. To me it feels likethere is more to an adventure film because of places it is set in and gets meinvolved. It’s the kind of genre that can be mixed in with other genres suchas action, comedy, romance, horror and even thriller. Each adventure film isdifferent to another by using different directors or even characters and this isone reason I don’t seem to like every adventure film. For example IndianaJones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) to me was boring as well as TheLord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) seemed to cliché for myliking. It seemed to predictable and seemed prolong with all of the differentfilms.
STAR THEORYOne of the main reasons I like Pitch Black (2000) or The Chronicles of Riddickfor that matter is the actor Vin Diesel. He is one of my favourite actors andI tend to watch all of the films that he stars in. the Italian, African-American has been in films such as Fast and Furious (2001) and Fast Five(2009) along with Saving Private Ryan (1999). Seeing Vin Diesels body shapeand form and how he is built, he looks perfect for any of the badboy/action roles as he seems like the kind of person you would not want tocross, which is one reason why I enjoy watching him on screen. I think thatthe Star Theory works well within every film as it can expand the targetaudience for the film. Even if a trailer of a film looks rather bad or not asexciting as most films, people will still go and see the film if it has a certainactor/actress within the film. This helps films make more money withinmerchandise and in the cinema. In my own personal opinion certain filmswhich have been made would not probably not of been as successful ifthey did not use the certain actors that they have used. For example thewhole Fast and Furious films would not of been the same without Vin Dieselas he seems to of made the film. Even though Fast and Furious: Tokyo Driftdoesn’t have him within the film, He still shows an appearance which makesthe film more exciting.
INTERTEXTUALITYIntertextuality is something which is used within films and can be used within television programsif appropriate. It is the shaping of a text meaning by another text and this particular figures caninclude any of the following; Allusion Quotation Calque Plagiarism Translation Pastiche ParodyIntertextuality is linked to the creativeness of things as it can inspire you to create somethingentirely different yet with references with something else. Everything within the media has beeninfluenced by something else and has inspired someone to create their own thing. It has become ahuge part of the media without people realising it, let alone realising that they are doing itthemselves. People depend on this without knowing and also use this to target and reach out to aspecific audience.
One example which shows intertexuality rather well is the film Pitch Black (2000)loosely references another film Alien (1979) or even Bladerunner (1982) which could besimilar. The mise en scene within Pitch Black, juxtaposition a Hi-Tech equipment suchas space ships with Lo-Tech dirt and grime with imagery with intense human struggleand strength. This is reinforcing that the future itself is not as spic and span as peoplemay like to think it is and isn’t as clean and polished as people may think. Yet thematter of the fact is it has been portrayed to be degrading for the rest of the humanrace on how life will be like in years to come.INTERTEXTUALITY

PITCH BLACK (2000) : MYTHOUGHTSThis is one specific film within the Adventure Genrethat I love and could never get tired of watching. Itsoriginal and the whole narrative within the film is justdifferent. The actor Vin Diesel is one of the reasons Ienjoy this film as his him as an actor fits the characterhe plays perfectly. All the adventure films seem tofind the right actors to play their perfect character itisn’t just given to anyone. First time in watching this, its like you don’t know whats going to happen orwhats going on until you watch it all you understandand it’s a film I would never get bored of. MEDIA LITERACYMedia Literacy is a selection of different abilities which enable people to do all of the following; Analyse Evaluate Create messages in a wide variety of media modes Genres Forms.By being able to do all of these things, it shows and helps understand how the mass media works. Each person can produce meanings, their ability to be organized and also how to use them wisely.A media literate person is someone who can describe and explain the role media in their life.Giving them the knowledge of Media Literacy, gives them opportunities which can be presentedby both or either the new or traditional communications services. There are many reasons whyMedia Literacy is important today, and that’s because any online environment where the possibilityfor direct content regulation diminishes, the need for a media literate public increases. Bothconsumers and citizens need to be aware of the many risks and all of the opportunities offeredacross an array online and even mobile service activities.
MEDIA LITERACYEach film in which I have made reference to within this slide show, I have found out througheither looking through different types of magazines with a full page advertisement. I have alsofound out about the films through different adverts advertising the DVD or Blue-Ray either sayingit has been released and you can now buy it or even big store brands such as ASDA, Tesco,Morrisons and Sainsburys advertising that they are now selling the product. Word of mouth orsocial networking sites has also helped me find out when a film has been released. By being toldabout a film and then going to search for the trailer, it enlightens me on what the film might beabout and gives me a brief insight on the film. If I haven’t looked for release dates myself on theinternet then I have say trailers which have been sown on the TV when I have been sat downwatching it. This is another way films get advertised and let the people know that something new iscoming their way. It is very rare I come across an advert which has either been posted on theinternet on either web apps or blogs which I have found out about a brand new film what hasmade me want to go and watch it. Having web apps or blogs enables you to be directed to theofficial site (if they have one) to find out more information about the film and this can make youmore eager to go and actually see the film. Media Literacy in the aspect of the audience issomething which is becoming more common on helping the audience to find out about either newreleases or new films which are coming soon.
RECEPTION THEORYReception Theory is something what provides a specific understanding of media texts. And this issimply by understanding how the texts provided are read by all of the audience. Through the meansof cinema and television viewing, there is a whole different experience were it can create a differentmeaning. There is one major important aspect of Reception theory and that is the media text, this isthe interaction which is created between the audience and the text. Different audiences have differentviewing experiences and see things in different ways and this is the meaning which is created betweenthe viewer and either the film or television program as it is seen throughout. This specific theorywhich is within the media, argues that contextual factors more that the actual textual ones, actuallyinfluence the way in which the audience or viewer watches the film or television program. Thecontextual factors include several things in which seems to place the audience or viewer in context, just by mainly three steps, Elements of the viewer’s identity Viewers preconceived Broad social, historical and political issues. The context that the viewer seems to be placed in is all done by taking into account all of thedifferent factors which can influence the audience or the viewer will read and will create a meaningfrom the text.
RECEPTION THEORYWith the reception theory each individual person enjoys a certain style of genre which can somehow relate to what they are like and their identity. For my own personal experience of each film,an Adventure genre is what I love to watch. The genre itself has different elements within the filmand can be unpredictable all the time and having been combined with other genres it opens thefilm up a lot more to me. Having watching an adventure film enables to get stuck into the filmwith the genre I get to loose myself within the film and I end up in my own little world. For thefilms with the actor from my star theory in the a previous slide, this is showing what I like. Bywatching films with Vin Diesel in or even other muscular men, apart from the main obviousreason of attraction and something to look at on screen, it adds to the sense of thrill as everywoman wants a muscular once in their life which can protect them and have their own day dreamsand fantasies about this day, we all know that its less likely to happen. I watch Adventure filmsbecause each one is different no matter how predictable it maybe, its still worth a watch andlooking out for each individual actor to see if they fit the part of their character and if theypreform well because everyone has their own opinions on how someone can appear on screen.
