Zero To Hero
WHAT IS ZERO TO HERO?
•Zero to Hero is a unique team building challenge, which gives you the opportunity to work
together to create and then execute an entrepreneurial fundraising idea.
!
•The challenge has no cost and is proven to build essential working skills and motivate employees.
!
•Colleagues are challenged to collaborate with each other to raise donations for the Zoo’s
Conservation Fund by planning and implementing a successful fundraising initiative.
!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
•Under the direction of our Management Intern, each activity has been designated a retail lead that
will coordinate all efforts. Innovation, creativity and teamwork are vital if we are to successfully
raise money.
!
•Through research and careful planning, we have selected activities that will promote team building
and make the most profit to support the Zoo’s Conservation Fund.
!
•This gives all employees a chance to develop their skills while offering an excellent opportunity for
peer-to-peer development.
Pros & Cons
Pros
We raise money for a great cause, The Detroit Zoo. More specifically, the
new PPCC and the Wolf Habitat.
Each event was geared towards bringing distant departments together.
Retail, Concessions, Grounds, and Catering tend to keep to their own.
My personal development as a leader and manager.
Cons
The Detroit Zoo will want SSA to continue fundraising efforts for years to
come.
!
Our Objective
Raise $10,000 for the Detroit Zoo’s Animal
Conservation Fund.
Unite the distant departments at the Detroit Zoo.
Boost team morale and motivation.
Develop my individual managerial and leadership
abilities.
And most importantly, to have fun!
!

Mongolian BBQ
We had some initial challenges with
our first event.
About two hours before the event I
had made a call to BD’s Royal Oak
only to discover that they would be
canceling the fundraiser.
Recovery actions were taken by
myself as well as Neil to revive our
fundraiser, and a few short weeks
later we had succeeded.

To whom it may concern,
We at Service Systems Associates are independently raising funds to help
our partner at the Detroit Zoological Society. All proceeds go towards funding the
Detroit Zoo's mission of Celebrating and Saving Wildlife, focusing on animal
conservation. Your generous donation will help fund its continuing efforts to
educate our community.
Fewer natural wildlife habitat areas remain each year. Moreover, the
habitat that remains has often been degraded to bear little resemblance to the
wild areas that existed in the past. When an ecosystem has been dramatically
changed by human activities—such as agriculture, oil and gas exploration,
commercial development or water diversion—it may no longer be able to provide
the food, water, cover, and places to raise young. Every day there are fewer
places left that wildlife can call home.
With community support, the Detroit Zoo can further increase its
contribution to wildlife conservation, providing increased opportunities to
conserve threatened species and habitats. We would greatly appreciate
monetary or merchandise donations to help our mission of raising funds for
Animal Conservation.
Your Generous Donation Will Help:
• Wolf Habitat: Construction will begin this year! The design of the habitat
will include grassy meadows, trees, a flowing stream and pond, wolf dens
and elevated rock outcroppings from which the wolves can overlook the
surrounding area.
• Polk Penguin Conservation Center: Inspired by Sir Ernest Shackleton’s
legendary Antarctic expeditions as well as epic crossings of the Drake’s
Passage, the facility will feature 4-D effects such as arctic blasts, rough
waves and snow, and physical elements such as ice crevasses. The
building’s exterior will evoke a tabular iceberg. The habitats will ensure an
optimal environment for the penguins’ welfare and encourage wild
behavior, from diving and porpoising to nesting and rearing young.
We look forward to working with you soon. For more information concerning this
matter please contact:
Chris Searle at (586) 612-4040 or chrissearle@kmssa.com with any questions or
concerns.
Donation Solicitation
Weeks prior to the event, I was
hard at work!!
After a few failed attempts to solicit donations
over the phone, I began a journey towards a
more direct approach.!
With a stack of letters I went business to
business with high hopes of acquiring donation
items for our upcoming raffle.!
The success of obtaining my first item fueled my
motivation to get more.!
Items were solicited from Royal Oak,
Birmingham, Rochester, and other surrounding
locations that were willing to help support our
cause, The Detroit Zoo.

Knowledge
From this experience, I learned….
How to be a better leader, team member, and individual.
Never to take NO for an answer.
Hard work ALWAYS pays off in the end.
Lead by example, not by words.
Empathy is better than sympathy.
It is the little things that matter most.
Consistency is key to success.
Passion, or lack there of, will make or break you.
To be more assertive when my hard work is on the line.
