2. Edward ‘Eddie’ Virago
• Age: 24
• Nationality: British
• Lives in a small country cottage in Yorkshire
• Hobbies: Bike-riding/Photography/Filming
• Personality: Antisocial, strong, masculine, Christian, bad-tempered,
alcoholic, widower.
• Characteristics: Helmet, Leather Clothing, Cross Necklace, Virago Bike
etc.
3. Character Influences for Eddie
The Driver from Nicolas Winding Refn’s
2011 crime thriller Drive
The unnamed protagonist of Drive was a
large influence to this character because at
first you can interpret him as being a ‘good’
character, despite the rugged personality
and anti-establishment clothing. However,
much like The Driver, Eddie is going to have
a darker and sinister side to him with
domestic violence and involvement with
crime of all kinds. The way Ryan Gosling
acts as The Driver in Refn’s Drive is also the
acting style I want Eddie to conveyed e.g.
rogue-ish, quiet, violent, independent,
good/bad etc.
4. Character Influences for Eddie
Luke from Derek Cianfrance’s 2013 film
The Place Beyond the Pines
Much like The Driver character in Drive,
Luke has the similar mixed personality that
splits the good from the bad. The good in
this case being that he wants to be with
the ex-girlfriend and make a family with
them and the bad being his violence, his
line of work (stunt-bike driver) and his
involvement with crimes such as bank
robbery. This was the biggest influence for
me when writing Eddie as a character
because he wants to reunite with his
spouse, rides a motorbike and even wears
a cross tattoo influencing the theme of
Christianity.
5. Costuming Influences for Eddie
The Bikers from Quadrophenia
(1979)
Peter Fonda from Easy Rider (1969)
Marlon Brando from The Wild One
(1953)
6. Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Virago
• Age: 21
• Nationality: British
• Deceased
• Personality: Feminine, strong, Atheist, can be cruel, bad-tempered
and violent; hence the title of the film ‘Virago’ meaning a
domineering and violent woman and also the model of bike Eddie
rides.
• Characteristics: Bloodied bandages covering the entirety of her face,
white dress, curled hair etc.
7. Character Influences for Elizabeth
Dolores from Martin Scorsese’s 2010
thriller Shutter Island
Dolores was a big influence on Elizabeth
because at the start of the film she is
conveyed as an innocent and overly-
feminine woman who Teddy dreams
about. However, once we reach the
climax of the film we learn how Dolores
was in fact a psychopath who drowned
her and Teddy’s kids. These
psychopathic tendencies are reflected
through Elizabeth in that by the end we
learn how she is using Eddie to bring
herself back to life, not what she told
Eddie she was going to do. The
‘vanishing’ of Elizabeth in one of
Teddy’s dreams also influenced our
dream sequence.
8. Character Influences for Elizabeth
Louise from Georges Franju’s Eyes
Without a Face
Louise’s character form the French
classic ‘Les Yeux Sans Visage’ is a big
influence over the visual impression of
Elizabeth in the film. Her feminine
mannerisms and classic horror elements
that she conveys with her covered face
and spirit-like walk is the acting style I
want Elizabeth to be portrayed like
except with a more demonic
personality.
9. Character Influences for Elizabeth
The Female from Jonathan Glazer’s
2013 horror/thriller Under The Skin
The Female character from Glazer’s
Under The Skin similarly has this
good/evil personality what with her
character murdering a series of men
except with a science-fiction twist
which, to a degree, our film will be with
the idea of somebody coming back to
life and supernatural powers. In our
film, Elizabeth will quiet and distant
with the same femme-fatale kind of
persona and mannerisms.
10. Costume Influences for Elizabeth
Louise from Eyes Without a Face
(1960)
Lucy in Dracula (1992)
The Trapeze Artist from Outlaws
Short Film (2015)
