In today's world, our lives are controlled by political correctness. Throughout society, people have to be concerned with what they say as it may be
misconstrued. People's lives are affected in numerous ways due to political correctness. This limits the given rights under the first amendment, the
freedom of speech. In turn, this changes humor and opinion. It also affects art and education. Although, political correctness can bring society closer
together and limit hatred. In the end, it can be argued that political correctness has both positive and negative affect in today's world. The negative
effects being limiting the first amendment, art, and education, and the positive effects being increasing equality.
First and foremost, political correctness has started to leak into our education. Political correctness has begun to find its way into our textbooks and
education. Learning material that is found offensive or discriminating is being removed or adjusted to avoid social issues. For example, Native
Americans aren't depicted to have long braids and "redskin" because it is now considered to be stereotypical and discriminating. If we begin to remove

These books are meant to teach the history of how things were. It shows and describes to us the cruelty of racism and shows us how it was not a

Every year more and more cases involving political correctness are making an astounding appearance. Political correctness deems all offensive
language and practices to be inappropriate, thus believing the language or practice should be eradicated. It has a strong relationship with cultural
Marxist. They both share the common characteristics: a "classless society" and a totalitarian nature ("Political Correctness" 6). In 1923, German
Marxists founded the Frankfurt School based off of the writings of Italian Communist, Antonio Gramsci. His writings focused on the culture of society
rather than the economics. When Hitler came to power in 1933, the members of the school fled to America. Before fleeing to America, the school
developed the "Critical Theory." This theory attacked the Western culture: Christianity, nationalism, capitalism, and conservatism. These criticisms
were addressed in famous works such as The Authoritarian Personality written by Theodor Adorno ("Political Correctness" 2). This written work
feared that the Western culture will guarantee discrimination and result in an American Holocaust. This paved the path towards political correctness
(3). Although, political correctness can be traced back to World War I, it was uncommon terminology to most Americans prior to 1990 (Weigel). It

In an article from the Baylor Lariat on November 30th of 2015 entitled "Politically Intolerant: Political Correctness More about Not Hurting
Feelings", an unidentified author claims that having a differing opinion than someone else is nothing to be ashamed of; that people need to be more
tolerant of such opinions when voiced, and not worry about hurting people's feelings by stating facts. The article drew attention to an example of

One of the fallacies in this argument is that the article fails to realistically address the situation on political correctness. It seems as though this author
skips all of the middle ground and runs straight for the extremes. For example, the author juxtaposes the modern age sensitivity for the feelings of
other humans to the pre World War II era and Joseph Stalin's tyranny. The article compares them to the people who were "imprisoned, exiled or even
executed for showing opinions different from Joseph Stalin's dictatorial ideology"(Baylor Lariat). With this comparison, the author is stating that
children avoiding speaking their hurtful and offensive racist opinions in elementary school classrooms reflects the days when Joseph Stalin ruled a
country with terror and violence, killing millions during his reign. The place where there seems to be a bit of confusion with this comparison, is that
people kept their opinions to themselves under Stalin to cling to their lives, and people are holding tight to their opinions these days to protect the

I wonder, do the TV talking heads understand the true definition of the labels they hurl at public figures: "racist," "sexist," "bigoted," or worse––
based on nothing more than a comment taken out of context, someone's clumsy attempt at humor, or a photo or image that's the artistic expression of a

How many of us understand these definitions when we call someone a racist or sexist jerk? Jerk, perhaps... but racist or sexist? Perhaps... perhaps not.

Many see it as a form of censorship and that we should be able to say what we like regardless of how it affects other people. Many fear that it will

The problem this poses on speech is its lack of regard for common sense. A sinister example of political correctness was the shooting at Ft. Hood,
Texas, when a terrorist was allowed to be placed a in a position to attack. The results were 30 persons wounded and 13 killed. The Defense
Department's review of the incident found that the doctors overseeing the terrorist shooter Major Nidal Hasan's, medical training repeatedly voiced
their concerns over his strident views on Islam and inappropriate behavior. However, they continued to give him positive performance evaluations
and kept him moving up through the ranks. In a statement made by Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, commented on the findings of the first
enquiry after the incident: "Indeed, troubling information about individuals is often withheld or filed discreetly away instead of being shared." The
inquiry showed the leaders who continued to accept and promote Hasan during his Army career were not blind to what they saw in front of them.
They did not fail to realize Hasan's irrational behavior. They simply chose to ignore his behavior for fear of being labeled as racist. Political
correctness is dead serious in its aims, seeking to impose a uniformity of thought and behavior on all Americans, therefore it is totalitarian in nature, and
