I chose this slide for the start of my presentation for a couple of reasons: first, because the little guy here looks a little like my son – he’s 5 years old and he’s always making goofy faces like that – but more importantly because I wanted to capture the joy and fun and creativity that can come along with educating and being educated. Education is not always portrayed that way.
As I was prepping this presentation, I was first planning on listing everything we’ve done with education at MRG, but then I thought that this presentation and this conference really should be much more of a conversation between educators. Because that’s what you all are – educators. You may call yourself consultants or coaches, but while you’re doing all that you’re educating – you identify and describe leadership behaviors for your clients, you let them know what highly effective leaders do, you talk to them about how honoring what motivates them can make their lives happier, you identify for them which sales behaviors can increase their performance. You share best practices, you give them strategies to improve themselves, you tell stories. You are all educators.
And now you’ve come to this conference to continue your education, and we applaud you - because how can you be a great educator if you’re not continuing to educate yourself? So what I want to let you know now is that here at MRG, we’re in it with you. Our strategic goal for Education is to build expertise, enhance MRG’s education brand, and help grow our company through quality educational offerings. Ongoing education and fostering an Educational community are some of our core values. Our expertise becomes your expertise; our success is your success.
So, what have we been doing for Education lately? Some of you may have heard about our Remote Education initiative. We now have a learning management system and can offer certification in our assessments much more often and in a much more convenient way. We still offer in-person certification, and we still highly value time spent in actual physical contact as one of the most powerful ways to learn and connect – and so must you, as you’re all here – but we did not want to allow physical limitations to prevent or delay our message and our expertise from getting out there.
In putting together that program, we’re responding to requests to make our certification and our learning faster, more accessible, and more relevant. We’ve modularized our offerings so that people can learn about just the assessments they need at the time they need them.
So if someone wants to be certified in LEA 360 but isn’t ready for the other assessments like Strategic Directions and role expectations, yet, they can do that.
If they need a refresher in just IDI rather than the whole Personal Directions suite, we can do that much more easily. And I want to give a big shout-out to Mr. Jim Lomac right now, for leading the lion’s share of the remote certifications, and also to Cindy for managing a ton of the details.
So, what does this mean to me, you might be thinking - I’ve been certified for a long time. A couple of things – one of the perks of coming to this conference is that you get 20% off your next certification for you or someone within your company. So if you‘re not already certified in IDI or PD, think about it. If you don’t use SPA, consider adding that to your toolkit. It’s a lot easier now. Additionally, if you feel like you need a refresher on anything… let’s say you haven’t used SD in awhile but you have a big project coming up…all of the online resources set up for certification are available to you. Any active network member who wants access to materials and resources in our Learning Management System for an assessment in which they are already certified can have that at no cost!
So, how else is MRG working to foster this Education Community? How many of you have been to our Community Website? If you haven’t, you really need to check it out. We put the Community Website together in direct response to requests from you – we kept hearing, we know you have a ton of great articles and research studies – how can we access them? Here they are. We have best practices, recorded webinars, articles, and presentations. And we’re continually updating and adding new materials.Definitely check it out.
Speaking of webinars. Who here has attended one of our free webinars? Over the past 2 years, we have presented 18 webinars on different topics that you and our other network members have requested! And we’ve worked hard to keep those FREE!! Rob just keeps pumping out that awesome research, and we feel it’s our imperative to share it with you! It just makes sense… The more you know, the better you’re going to work with our assessments, the better success you’ll have with your clients, and the more business you’ll get. The more business you get, the more we get. It’s a win-win!
Along the same lines, a new thing that we’re doing for the first time this year is to hold a couple of public webinars. We have a webinar on Developing Women Leaders scheduled for October and one on Coaching for Generational Differences in December, and both are open to whoever wants to come. You can invite your clients and potential clients, and you can show them that the assessments you use are backed by solid research.
And we want to know what you want us to present, talk and write about! Many of you may have heard about or joinedthe LinkedIn Group that we started for the conference. That is open and active right now for you to give your feedback on anything and everything you want to tell us, about the conference, about what you need from us in general, about what you hope for us to provide you in the future. And same goes for the i-wall, discussion forum, emails, phone calls – however you want to get the message to us, please do!
So, going forward, what are our plans for Education at MRG?Continue to enhance the remote learning options so they are more engaging, more accessible and top qualityContinue to provide our research to you for free in both private (network-only) and public webinars so we can keep learning from each otherFoster a learning community by exploring online discussion Forums via LinkedIn and other platforms And Find new ways to reach and engage our network of consultants (you), potential network members, your clients and potential clients by…Working to publish more studies online or in journals. And we hope to start and maintain a blog
So, what are we doing at MRG, to foster that learning community within ourselves - to walk our talk? Well, we’re doing some of the usual things, like attending and speaking at conferences – including SIOP, SHRM, L’unionInteralliee, SPIM, Executive Leadership Summits, and MaineBiz Momentum to name a few, and a bunch of us are going to the Neuroleadership conference in NYC in October. We’ve been and will continue to hold internal webinar lunch and learns, so that our whole company can keep learning about the industry, the research, and what topics matter to you. A new thing that Tricia started this year is a book club. Our whole company was required to read Your Brain at Work by David Rock and get together and talk about it. It was very interesting and quite the bonding experience! And Tricia has also incorporated regular meditation sessions into our corporate culture. She has literally given us the space and encouraged us to go sit on our bums in a dark room together!! Similarly, Staci has set up a weekly game session with her team, called “Monday Mornings used to suck!” where they get together and play board games to start the week off right.
What does that have to do with education and learning? One of the things that you’ll hear about in Tricia’s Neuroleadership presentation on Friday is that the brain works optimally when it is least stressed. Relaxation and fun are actually better for thinking, better for performance, and better for learning. What has every research study Rob has done on leadership told us? - that Strategic is one of the most important behaviors for effective leadership. How can you think strategically – long range and broad term - if you are stressed out? We have to walk our talk. And so do you.
So, as we embark on this wonderful conference, take advantage - learn from us! And help us learn from you. Because we are all teachers and learners. We have all decided to make this business our life’s work because we hold some shared beliefs and we want our clients to believe in them too:We believe things like…I can be a better leaderI can have a happier, more fulfilled lifeI can find out what motivates me and incorporate that into what I doI can sell more and be more successfulWe can be better We can be happierThat’s what MRG assessments help to unlock. That’s what your client work helps to foster. And that is why education at MRG and education with MRG is important.
