Marva Collins Story
1.
2. Marva Collins is one of the most
influential teachers and education activists of the
20th century. Working to gain equal access to quality
education for African-American students, she started
her own school in Chicago and founded a style of
education that came to be known as the Collins
Method. She married with Clarence Collins and had
three children, Eric, Patrick and Cynthia. Collins
opened the Westside Preparatory School in the
second floor of her home in the Chicago
neighborhood of Garfield Park. It was a modest
opening with just a few students. Yet Collins made it
clear that her classroom was available to any child
who'd been failed by the bigger school systems,
especially those who'd been diagnosed with
impossible-to-overcome learning disabilities.
Marva Collins and her school became a
national story. Time and Newsweek came calling, as
did 60 Minutes and Good Morning America. In 1982,
her life and the founding of the school were turned
into a television movie that starred Cicely Tyson and
Morgan Freeman.
As it grew, Collins moved her school out
of her home and to a new location on Chicago's South
Side. In addition, other schools bearing her name
have opened in Ohio and Florida. Collins' students are
now doctors, lawyers and educators.

4. As I watched the movie, I do realized on how teaching transformed the lives of
thousands of students. I do much appreciate and learned to Marva Collins Story because she
kneeled on how much she want to help students ,and change their lives into professional
one. She treasure how education is important to students. Knowing that teaching it isn't to
teach something but someone who inspired others to be the best of they can. It is about
loving, caring and understanding about your students life. It is a wonderful example of how
the dedication of the educator and the love of children can work miracles.
5. It focused on a woman who chose to do more that just teach her students, a
woman who chose to love her students . I learned a lot about dealing with children who have
been labeled with learning problems and how important it is to see the child for what they
are rather that what someone chose to call them. Marva is the best example to us all, and
truly inspiring me, I am studying to become a professional teacher and hoping that I will be
able to give inspiration and motivation liked she did. Her methods give us hope for the future
education . It gives us the hope that all children should succeed. Marva Collins story is an
inspiring story of a teacher who was passionate about teaching and excelled more in
teaching.

passionate about teaching and excelled more in teaching. Her ideas an contribution s are
very much needed in this confusing world where educators don’t support the mandated
curriculum and many of our kids are still being left very much behind.
