Blood supply of Long Bone

1. Blood supply of long bones
The following arteries supply the long bones.
(1) Nutrient artery
It enters the shaft through the nutrient
foramen, runs obliquely and through the
cortex and divides into ascending and
descending branches in the medullary cavity.
Each branch is further divided into small
parallel channels which anastomosis with the
other arteries.

2. Nutrient artery supplies the medullary cavity, inner
2/3 of cortex and metaphysis.
(2) Periosteal arteries
These are numerous branches at the muscular
and ligamentous attachments. The enters beneath
the periosteum and supply 1/3 of the cortex.
(3) Epiphysial arteries
These arteries supply the epiphysis of the long
bones.
(4) Metaphysial arteries
These are derieved from the neighbouring
systemic vessels. The pass directly into the
metaphysis
