Camphor essential oil is extracted from the Cinnamomum Camphora (also known as Laurus camphora) of the Lauraceae family and is also known as true camphor, hon-sho, gum camphor, as well as Japanese and Formosa camphor.
The camphor tree can grow up to 35 meters (100 feet) and the active component is found in every part of the tree. The tree is native to Formosa (Taiwan), China and Japan and can often grow very old. It must be at least 50 years old to produce the oil
Chinese used it to build ships and temples, because of the durable and aromatic properties of the wood
Camphor oil is extracted by steam from the the chipped wood, root stumps and branches and is then rectified under vacuum and filter pressed.
After distillation and rectification under vacuum it is filter pressed and 3 fractions of oil are produced known as white, yellow and brown camphor.
Only the white camphor oil is used and has a clear and fresh smell. The brown and yellow camphor is toxic and carcinogenic since it contains safrole and is not used in aromatherapy.
he main chemical components are a-pinene, camphene, b-pinene, sabinene, phellandrene, limonene, 1,8-cineole, y-terpinene, p-cymene, terpinolene, furfural, camphor, linalool, bornyl acetate, terpinen-4-ol, caryophyllene, borneol, piperitone, geraniol, safrole, cinnamaldehyde, methyl cinnamate and eugenol.
The brown and yellow camphor oil has a very high safrole content, with yellow having between 10 - 20 % and the brown having 80%. These two oils are considered toxic, as well as carcinogenic.
Used in aromatherapy applications, Camphor Oil’s lasting scent, which is similar to that of menthol and can be described as cool, clean, clear, thin, bright, and piercing, is known to promote fuller and deeper breathing. For this reason, it is commonly used in vapor rubs for its ability to offer relief to a congested respiratory system by clearing the lungs and addressing symptoms of bronchitis and pneumonia.Used cosmetically or topically in general, the cooling effects of Camphor Essential Oil can soothe inflammation, redness, sores, insect bites, itching, irritation, rashes, acne, sprains, and muscular aches and pains, such as those associated with arthritis and rheumatism.
Used medicinally, Camphor Oil stimulates and boosts the circulation as well as the function of the rest of the body’s systems, including digestion, excretion, metabolism, and secretion.
Precautions
Camphor oil is a powerful oil and should be used with care. It is not really used in aromatherapy as it is classed as a convulsant and neurotoxin.
Overdosing can cause convulsions and vomiting and pregnant women as well as people suffering from epilepsy and asthma should not use it.
Rosmarinus officinalis, commonly known as rosemary, is a woody, perennial herb with fragrant, evergreen, needle-like leaves and white, pink, purple, or blue flowers, native to the Mediterranean region
The botanical name of this plant is compounded of two Latin words, signifying Sea-dew; and indeed Rosemary thrives best by the sea
To extract the essential oil by steam distillation, the
vegetable matter was placed in a glass column, of which
the lower and higher parts were connected to a water
flask and a condenser, respectively. The water vapour
produced in the flask crosses the plant, charged with
essential oil then to the condenser, where it is condensed.
After condensation, the oil is separated from water by
decantation. The extraction of essential oil by hydro-
distillation was carried out under the same conditions as
the steam distillation. The only difference is that in this
case the vegetable matter is laid out in the flask contain-
ing water and the unit is carried to boiling. The vapour
mixture of water–oil produced in the flask then passes to
the condenser, where it is condensed. The oil is recovered after decantation
The essential oils obtaned by both are analysed by GC MS
All samples studied belong to the chemotype α-pinene/l,8-cineole/eamphor, the main and characteristic components being camphor (17.2-34.7%), α-pinene (10.2-21.6%), 1,8-cineole (12.1-14.4%), camphene (5.2-8.6%), borneol (3.2-7.7%), β-pinene (2.3-7.5%), verbenone (2.2-5.8%), β-caryophyllene (1.8-5.1%), limonene (2.0-3.8%), α-terpineol (1.2-2.5%), myrcene (0.9-4.5%), p-cymene (0.2-3.4%), bornyl acetate (0.2-2.3%), linalool (0.3-1.0%) and terpinen-4-ol (0.4-0.9%). The effect of harvest time on the oil production and chemical composition was examined. The highest oil yields (1.6-1.8%) were recorded during the fruiting period (summer)
