Editor's Notes

  1. Intersectionality - the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, gender, and class, which creates overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination and disadvantage. Patriarchy - a social system in which men hold primary power and dominate in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege, and control of property. Misogyny - dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women. Hegemony - leadership or dominance, especially by one country or social group over others. Androcentrism - a perspective that is dominated by male viewpoints and centered on male experiences, often to the exclusion of female experiences. Gender - The state of being male or female, typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones. Masculinity - The possession of qualities traditionally associated with men, such as strength, courage, and assertiveness. Sexism - prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex. Femininity - qualities or attributes regarded as characteristic of women. Stereotype - A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.
  2. Female characters in Noli Me Tangere are characterized as either virtuous and pure or corrupt and immoral. Maria Clara is portrayed as a symbol of purity and innocence, while Doña Victorina is depicted as vain and manipulative. Sisa, the mother of the two main male characters, is a sympathetic character who is victimized by the patriarchal society.
  3. The author uses both feminine and masculine imagery in the text. For example, Maria Clara is described as a "pearl" and a "flower," which are traditionally feminine symbols. However, the author also uses masculine imagery to describe male characters, such as Crisostomo Ibarra being described as a "warrior" and a "hero." The use of these images reflects the traditional gender roles and expectations of the society in which the novel is set.
  4. Noli Me Tangere was written in the late 19th century in the Philippines, during a period of colonialism and social upheaval. The author's attitude toward women reflects the patriarchal norms of the society at the time. Women were expected to be submissive and virtuous, and those who challenged these expectations were often seen as immoral or dangerous. However, the novel also portrays the struggles of women within this society, such as Sisa's mental breakdown due to the pressures of motherhood and poverty. Overall, the novel provides a critique of the patriarchal society and the ways in which it oppresses women.
