15. What’s Next for Cayuga Centers?
We’ve held Strategic Listening Forums
with staff members and other stakeholders,
in preparation for developing a
Strategic Thinking Projection that will consider:
• Unmet needs in the environment
• Needs we have as a growing organization
• Future growth
Begun in 1852 by a group of civic minded women, we began by serving orphans and children whose families were unable to care for them. Initially located in a rented wooden house at 10 James Street in Auburn, they soon outgrew this building, and in 1854 purchased property on Owasco Street – the present day site of Kinney Drugs.
This mansion had been the home of a prominent grocer – CG Meaker. Built in 1908, his granddaughter recalls, “My Grandfather kept a strict watch upon the building of the house. Each night he would visit the site and check on the progress. At that time he would pay the workers for that day’s work.” Meaker’s wife Helena served on the agency’s board of trustees.
MTFC is the second of the evidence-based programs to be offered by Cayuga Centers
46 Fleming Street was purchased for the Weekend Respite program, which opened in 1994. The beginning of this program initiated several other programs over the following years - creating SPwDD – Services for People with Developmental Disabilities, licensed by the NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD.)
Received a contract to open the TFFC program in Palm Beach County, Florida.
