2. • Founded in 1923 after the Turkish Independence War as a
successor of the Ottoman Empire.
• Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is the founder leader of the modern
Turkish republic.
• Today, Turkey has more than 80 million citizens living mostly in
Anatolia and Balkans.
• Major player in the world economy (17th in nominal GDP)

3. Anatolia
• Anatolia has been a home to people since the dawn of
the humankind.
• Throughout the history, many civilizations have lived
in Anatolia making it a melting pot for different
cultures, religions, languages and traditions.
• Lots of major historical events like the Trojan War, the
Treaty of Kadesh, the Battle of Gallipoli happened in
Anatolia.
• A bridge between Europe and Asia.

8. • Turkish literature is divided into two groups; oral literature and written literature.
• Since Turkic people had lived nomadic life for a long time, the written literature
couldn’t develop until 14th-15th centuries.
• Yet, the oral literature is based on a highly sophisticated heritage.
• After the foundation of the Republic of Turkey, many Turkish authors and poets
including Nobel Prize Winner Orhan Pamuk, Yaşar Kemal, Nazım Hikmet, Ahmet
Hamdi Tanpınar, Sabahattin Ali have gained world wide recognition.

9. CINEMA
Turkish cinema is just 104 years old; however, it has brought up many talented
actors, actress and directors including Palme-D’or Winners Yılmaz Güney and
Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

10. • Yeşilçam (the Green Pine) is the Hollywood of Turkey. From 1950s to 1970s, Yeşilçam was
the major industry in the Turkish cinema. In time, it has lost strength and alternatives
have emerged.
• Yet, some Yeşilçam classics like Yol, Hababam Sınıfı, Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalım still have
an important place in the cinema of Turkey.
