2. Types of Music
Music is split into various genres which can be used separately or combined to create a hybrid genre. In
this way, music can be used to create meaning of different types. Some type of music genres include:
Jazz
Classical
Pop
Rock
Country
Folk
Gospel
Electronic
House
3. Effects of Varying Music
Jazz
Jazz creates a distinct staccato tune which is often improvised using the base notes. This creates a unique
tune and gives a distinctness to the production it is paired with.
Classical
Classical music can be used to create an old-fashioned effect which can indicate an older time period
such as a flashback. It can also be used to add elegance to a production through the opera style.
Pop
Pop is often a mixture of different genres as defined by the term ‘popular’, therefore the sound can often
have wide variations yet many agree that pop music usually share similar tones and are easily recognised.
Gospel
Gospel music gives a production a ‘heavenly’ aspect which is often portrayed through choir and string
instruments.
4. Examples
Cinderella
Composed by Patrick Doyle
Soft piano music creates a gentle tone.
Low drawn out organ music gives the music a cinematic effect.
Overlaid with voiceover to explain the plot.
Rises and falls with dramatic moments
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
Composed by Atli Örvarsson
Low drawn out strings (violin) dramatises the audio.
Underlying low drum beat builds tension to suit the video.
Synchronous dialogue explains each clip.
Crescendos towards the end of the trailer where the tagline is spoken.
The Age of Adaline
Composed by Rob Simonsen
Light melodic piano music gives a soft and gentle tone.
Long drawn out strings (violin) give tension and add drama.
Synchronous music explains each clip and asynchronous voiceover explains overall plot.
5. Music in my Production
I will use the following in my production:
A range of instruments (3-4) to create a comprehensive and melodic track. This allows me to create
different tones to suit the scene so I can match the music to actions.
My music will rise and dip at appropriate moments to create the correct tones throughout the
production.
I will heavily use piano and string music to create a track which is simultaneously gentle and tense as
they match the video.
Classical music
I will use the classical genre to create piano music which matches the genre of the production, this especially
matches the flashback scenes which are set in an earlier period and therefore fit with the ‘old-fashioned’ style of
classical music.
Gospel music
I will use the gospel genre through strings to create a ‘magical’ tone which fits to the fantasy genre I have used.
The gospel genre can be used to create a similar mystical tone as well as a gospel tone which will therefore fit
with the plot and the actions of my characters.
