The document summarizes how a student film project followed conventions of real media productions and the thriller genre. It notes that the project included an opening production company logo, simple titles throughout integrated with shots, a young male protagonist dressed in black, suspenseful shots of the protagonist walking with few face shots, and an urban setting. While the beginning train station shots were not eerie, later settings became more so. The project challenged conventions by using members of the public instead of professional actors.
1. COMPARISON TO
CONVENTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCTS
Evaluation Question #1
HOW OUR PROJECT USES THE CONVENTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCTS:
The first way in which our project follows the conventions ofreal media projects
is the fact that we have our production company name and logo at the beginning
of the film. This is the same as almost any media production you will ever watch.
The second way in which our project is similar to other projects is through our
use of simple yet effective titles throughout. The way we placed them as though
they are a part ofthe background is similar to a lot ofreal media productions.
Also the fact that some ofthe titles are interactive with what can be seen in the
shot e.g. when the protagoniststeps over the textonto the pavement.
Another conformation to real media products is our use ofa young male
protagonist, this conforms becausethe protagonistin thriller movies is usually a
young male. We also dressed him in black which is another conformation to the
costume a protagonist ofa thriller film would wear.
I believe that ourfilm is dramatic and suspenseful due to the use ofshots where
the protagonist is walking, as if to build up to something. Also through the fact
that the audience doesn’t get many shots ofthe protagonists face. The slow music
also adds to the tension and suspense ofthe intro.
Our settings can be disputed as to whether or not they follow thrillergenre
conventions, for examplethe shots in the train station at the beginning aren’t
particularly eerie however as the piece continues the setting becomes eerier.
The urban setting for our piece also added to the conventions ofthriller movies as
well as the conventions ofreal media for example lots offilms are set in urban
locations.
How did we challenge conventions?
A way in which we made our projectdifferent to real media projects is the fact that
everyonein our film, other than our main actor, was a member ofthe public. This
was risky becausepeople would be lilkely to look at the camera ordo things that are
unexpected possibly causing us to reshoot.
THRILLER GENRE
CONVENTIONS:
Some of the genre
conventions of a thriller are:
Dramatic/suspenseful
Slow music to create
tension
Eerie settings
Shadows
Simple fonts
On the whole I believe we
have more or less followed all
of these conventions.
The photo below shows our
urban location, the use of our
titles and the costume of our
protagonist.
