Efficient Energy Use
Efficient Energy Use Program
EFEU research areas
The main objective of the Efficient Energy Use (EFEU) research program is to build knowledge
and competence to enable future economic growth in new energy efficiency product and service
innovations.
EFEU research program is focused on providing methods, tools and technologies to
enable step-wise increase in energy efficiency beyond what can be achieved by constant
improvement and application of Best Available Techniques (BAT), and ultimately to move
economical and technical efficiency boundaries of process and energy systems through
system integration, optimisation and technology development.
The generic target of the EFEU research program is to develop methods and tools to
measure, model, analyse and optimise energy efficiency. The basic idea is to utilise system
level (top-down) approach in different scales instead of optimising individual system
component. The main focus of the program is on energy conversion and distribution, and
process industry. Firstly, the industry is the most significant individual energy end user in
Finland with a share of 47 %. Secondly, energy conversion and distribution is from EU and
larger perspective seen as a major contributor in improving energy efficiency, and new
fuels and concepts are emerging. The developed methods, tools and services for improving
energy efficiency provide participating companies means to improve both the energy
efficiency and the economic efficiency of their products and processes.

Work Package 1:
System energy efficiency analysis and optimisation
The objective is to develop methods for measuring, analysing and optimising energy
efficiency of systems. With a systems approach the most feasible efficiency improvements
will be identified and sub-optimization will be avoided. The methods are studied and
applied in all research applications of EFEU.
Work Package 2: Integrated energy efficient systems
The technology research of the EFEU program is carried out in WP2. It is focused on the
radical improvement of energy efficiency on the application areas of industrial sites, hybrid
separation systems and fluid handling systems.
Work Package 3: Energy efficiency services and solutions
New business opportunities related to energy efficiency services are in the focus of
WP3, and business models integrated to new technologies will be studied. Design of
collaborative organization models for energy efficiency implementation, especially in b-to-b
context is an integral part of the research.
Work Package 4: Foresight and dissemination
The objective of foresight is to assess how changes in the business environment will
affect the requirements for technology and services. Dissemination activities include cooperation with Motiva and other technology research programs including energy efficiency,
sustainability, and green growth as research themes. EFEU program aims to start and keep
up critical and unbiased discussion on energy efficiency. An important task in short term
is to study the status and future steps of standardisation and regulations related to energy
efficiency.
