2. Rizal had his early education in
Calamba and Binan
Rizal, who was born a physical
weakling, rose to become an
intellectual giant.
3. The first teacher of Rizal was his mother, who was
a remarkable woman of good character and fine
culture
On her lap, he learned at the age of three the
alphabet and the prayers.
As a tutor, Dona Teodora was paient ,
conscientuous and understanding.
She discovered first that her son had a talent for
poetry.
She encouraged him to write poems.
4. Private tutors give him lessons at home
First was Maestro Celestino
Second was Maestro Lucas Padua
Later, an old man named Leon Monroy, a
former classmate of Rizal’s father, became the
boy’s tutor.
His old teacher lived at the Rizal home and
instructed Jose in Spanish and Latin
Unfortunately, he did not lived long. He died
five months later.
5. After a Monroy’s death, the
hero’s parents decided to send
their gifted son to a private
school in Binan.
6. One Sunday afternoon in June, 1869, Jose, after
kissing the hands of his parents and a tearful paring
from his sister, left Calamba for Binan.
He was accompanied by Paciano, who acted as his
second father.
The two brothers rode in a carromata, reaching their
destination after one and one half hours drive.
They proceed to their aunt’s house where Jose as to
lodge.
It was almost night when they arrived and the moon
was about to rise.
7. That same night, Jose, with his cousin
named Leandro, went sightseeing in he
town.
Instead of enjoying the sights, Jose became
depressed because of homesickness.
8. Jose's’ daily routine:
Hears mass at 4 am or studies lesson
before going to mass
Goes to orchard to look for mabolo to
eat
Breakfast
Goes to class at 10 am
Lunch break
9. Goes back to school at 2 pm
Goes home at 5 pm
Prays with cousins
Studies lessons, then draws a little
Has supper
Prays again
Plays in the street if moon is bright
sleeps
10. The next morning (Monday) Paciano brought his
younger brother to the school of Maestro Justiniano
Aquino Cruz.
The school was in the house of the teacher, which
was a small nipa hut about 30 meters from the home
of Jose’s aunt
Paciano introduced Jose to the teacher, after which he
departed to return to Calamba.
11. Jose described his teacher in Binan as
follows:
He was tall, thin, long-necked, with sharp
nose and a body slightly bent forward and
he used to wear sinamay shirt, woven by the
skilled hands of the women of Batanggas.
12. Old Juancho - freely gave Jose painting
lessons
Jose Rizal and his classmate Jose
Guevarra became apprentices of Old
Juancho
13. Uncle Jose Alberto – gave wise direction
in the studies of Jose
Uncle Gregorio – instilled into the mind
of Jose the love of education

and make visual pictures of everything.”

15. In academic studies, Jose beat all Binan boys.
He surpassed them all in Spanish, Latin, and
other subjects.
Some of his older classmates were jealous of his
intellectual superiority.
They wickedly squealed to the teacher whenever
Jose had a fight outside the school and even told
lies to discredit him before the teacher’s eyes.
Consequently the teacher had to punish Jose.
16. December 17, 1870- Jose left Binan
Talim– the steamer that Jose rode
Arturo Camps- a Frenchman and a
friend of Don Francisco, he took care
of Jose during the trip
17. January 20, 1872- Cavite mutiny
February 17, 1872-Fathers Mariano
Gomez, Jose Burgos and Jacinto
Zamora were implicated and
executed
The GOMBURZA were leaders of
the secularization movement
18. In 1872, Dona Teodora was arrested on a
malicious charge that she aided his
brother Jose Alberto in trying to poison
his wife
Jose Alberto planned to divorce his wife
because of her infidelity
Jose Albento’s wife connived with the
Spanish lieutenant of the Guardia Civil
and filed a case against Rizal’s mother
19. Antonio Vivencio del Rosario-
gobernadorcillo of Calamba, helped
the lieutenant arrest Dona Teodora
50 kilometers- Dona Teodora was
made a walk from Calamba to the
provincial prison in Santa Cruz
