1. This presentation will be giving an explanation
of what the class will be doing for the next 4
weeks.
2. During this presentation you will learn about
what we will be doing for our class Project
called “Plants in Action”. This presentation
will go over; the project objectives,
standards, what the students will be doing,
what you can do to help, the teachers role,
project based learning and my contact
information if you have any further questions.
3. During our “Plants in Action” unit students will be:
Choosing a plant to grow in our school green house with their
groups.
Using their research skills to decided what soil to use, how much
sunlight the plant needs and how much watering is needed to grow
a healthy plant.
Using collaboration between their group members to monitor and
take notes on their plants progress throughout the month.
Able to identify the different parts of the plant and determine the
function.
4. Following a class lesson about plants and their specific parts out 3rd
grade class will participate in a group project. This group project will
require the students to use collaboration, research, and observation
to be successful. Students will be breaking up into groups of 5 and
each group will have to choose from a list of 10 plants I have
selected for them to grow. It will be up to the groups collaboration
to determine what plant they want to grow. After selecting a plant
they must research the plants using the class computers to
determine; what soil, how much water and how much sunlight will
be needed to grow a healthy plant. Once they have completed their
research they will receive the proper material to start planting.
Throughout the month they will take turns through collaboration to
check on their plants and monitor the progress. When the month is
up the students will present the information through a PowerPoint
presentation. The PowerPoint will contain photos of the groups plant
and have all the information collected from the beginning of their
research to final reflections of their observations.
5. 7.) Describe the life cycle of plants, including seed, seed germination, growth, and reproduction.
• Describing the role of plants in a food chain
• Identifying plant and animal cells
• Describing how plants occupy space and use light, nutrients, water, and air
• Classifying plants according to their features
Examples: evergreen or deciduous, flowering or nonflowering
• Identifying helpful and harmful effects of plants
Examples:
- helpful—provide food, control erosion;
- harmful—cause allergic reactions, produce poisons
• Identifying how bees pollinate flowers
• Identifying photosynthesis as the method used by plants to produce food
3.) Describe ways energy from the sun is used.
6. As parents you can help by:
Asking questions about the plant your
son/daughter are growing.
See if they know the parts and functions of
the plant.
Showing interest in the project can go a long
way because this will help your child become
more excited in the project.
7. During this unit I will be:
Meeting with groups to encourage
collaboration and creative thinking between
group members.
Observing the students to make sure they are
understanding the unit.
Going over plant functions and ways to
research throughout the unit.
Encouraging students to make their own
decisions with their groups.
8. This unit will be using project based learning,
which is having the students learn through
projects.
Students learn how to collaborate with others
and choose topics they would like to do.
Students tend to enjoy learning through
projects based learning rather than through
lecture.
