1. All about Plants! This unit is designed to teach the students about the life cycle of plants and how they survive in their habitat. We will look closely at how plants help us survive and look at the consequences on our quality of life if we fail to take care of our world and specifically, plants. The benefit of this unit will be that it will help students become more aware of how plants are a crucial part of our world that must be taken care of. Alabama Course of Study Standards Objectives for the Unit ACOS 3rd Grade Science 7.) Describe the life cycle of plants, including seed, seed germination, growth, and reproduction. • Describing the role of plants in a food chain • Identifying plant and animal cells • Describing how plants occupy space and use light, nutrients, water, and air • Classifying plants according to their features Examples: evergreen or deciduous, flowering or nonflowering • Identifying helpful and harmful effects of plants Examples: - helpful-provide food, control erosion; - harmful-cause allergic reactions, produce poisons • Identifying how bees pollinate flowers • Identifying photosynthesis as the method used by plants to produce food -Students will be able to create a food chain that shows how important plants are to the survival of humans -Students will be able to label the parts of a plant -Students will be able to distinguish wihich type of habitat is characterized by certain plants. Project Based Learning is a great way to have students learn through authentic learning experiences that are applicable, interesting, and meaningful. Students will be responsible for learning about the parts of a plant, researching things about plants and habitats using google earth, the internet, and other resources. The teacher will be responsible for facilitating this research and helping the students create a design for a garden. Parents will need to help students do research at home.
