Natural Resource Management Personal Statement
Statement of purpose
My interest in Natural Resource Management was sparked during my last undergraduate course of my Associates degree, Geology with Lab. It was
there that I was introduced to a wide range of environmental issues, inside and outside of the field, such as ecosystem preservation, restoration efforts
and the economic use of non–renewable resources. After finishing my associates degree, I wanted to learn more about how we could sustainability
maintain these rates of harvest and pollution creation indefinitely. After I chose to pursue a Bachelors degree in Environmental Science, I decided to
delve deeper into the important subject of Sustainability. While the University offered depth and range across the field, these courses also put into
perspective the importance and significance of natural resource management and the application of its fundamentals to environmental related issues.
By the spring of my junior year, I had acquired a strong foundation in the concepts and methods of obtaining solutions for environmental problems. I
knew I would want to continue my graduate studies in the field after getting some practical experience. So after I came home from my deployment to
Afghanistan, I volunteered at the City of Council Visitor Center as a greeter. There I was introduced to the mission of the Bureau of Land
Management and the Fish and Game. The dedication and passion they showed to keep our public lands pristine, was awe–inspiring to me. I knew then
I had found where I wanted to be.
When I finally finished by degree, I started looking for other ways to get actual experience in natural resource management. That's when I found the
Master Naturalist program. There I was acquainted with local like–minded people who contributed to many types of conservation efforts. To include;
volunteering at nature centers, collecting data, monitoring wildlife, and guiding nature tours. One of the opportunities presented to us was counting
sage grouse on Leks in the spring. Here I learned first–hand that their breathtaking display during their dancing season, is on the decline in the Great

ACID RAIN
Acid rain occurs when sulfur dioxide from coal plant emissions combines with moisture present in the air. A chemical reaction creates this acid
precipitation. Acid rain can acidify and pollute lakes and streams. It causes similar effects to the soil. If enough acid rain falls in a given
environment, it can acidify the water or soil to a point where no life can be sustained. Plants die off. The AGRICULTURAL RUNOFF animals that
depend upon them disappear. The condition of the environment deteriorates. Agricultural runoff is a deadly source of pollutants which can degrade
environments,. Surface water washes over the soil and into lakes and streams. When it does so, it carries the fertilizers and pesticides used on the

Urban development is the primary cause of environmental degradation. As populations increased, so did the need for land for homes and farms.
Wetlands were drained. Environmental degradation is one of most urgent of environmental issues. Depending upon the damage, some environments

Personal Statement For Environmental Engineering
Preserving the environment is one of the most critical issues we are facing today. How we act now will determine the fate of future generations. What
really inspired me to consider environmental engineering as a profession was my Advanced Placement Environmental Science class in high school – it
opened my eyes to global issues such as overpopulation, loss of biodiversity, inefficient energy sources, irresponsible waste disposal, etc.– and it
motivated me to want to do something about it. What I want to ultimately accomplish in this field of work is facilitate the growth of the use of
renewable energy sources, support responsible population reduction initiatives, and develop agricultural practices that ensure food and water security
for every single person on the planet. The nature of the work varies depend on what one wants to specialize in. Many engineers work in office settings
(with a great deal of operational record keeping, paperwork, and technical reports), but it often requires hands–on work and on–site oversight, especially
when working in construction, ecosystem remediation, natural resource cultivation, or waste management. Oftentimes, engineers work over 40 hours a
week in order to meet deadlines and finish all their tasks. On average, daily face–to–face, email, and telephone communication, and group collaboration
with contractors, staff, and clients are necessary for careers offered to environmental engineers. At the same time, independent work is emphasized.

Environmental Science Reflection
Over the course of the semester, I feel that, in my Introduction to Environmental Science (EVR2001) class, I have learned an extensive amount about
current, past, and possibly future environmental issues that our planet is enduring. Many of the issues impacting our environment have caught my
attention and opened my eyes to the effects these issues are causing. Environmental science has had an impact on me personally, and has changed my
understanding and the intensity of my opinions on many environmental issues in a variety of ways. There are even particular environmental issues that
I find relevant to my own life for many reasons. This class taught me how I can reduce my own impact on the environment, which has even led me to
change some aspects of my life to reduce my environmental impact as a result. EVR2001 has impacted me personally, in many different ways First,
this class has brought so many issues to my attention, and taught me that almost anything can have a negative impact on our environment. For
example, I found it intriguing that even letting a pet cat, or feral cats in general, outside, is a severe negative threat to the biodiversity of an

Making Our School Systems Eco Friendly
Our generation today is known as the starter generation when it comes to sustainability. We are just now becoming economically aware and starting to
change our ways to help the environment. That might mean we are starting to be smarter about our means of transportation or it might mean that we
are making more of an effort to recycle. Either way we are starting to make strides towards reducing our carbon footprint. While it is great that our
generation is doing these things, it is extremely important that we adults instill an even greater will to help the environment within the generations
following ours. This is why we believe that schools nowadays should in cooperate the idea of "going green" and bring environmentally friendly ways
into their everyday activities.
As human development and developmental psychology majors, we feel strongly about helping children grow and develop into the best that they can

1.1 Environmental Worldviews and Values
Environmental worldviews are how people think the world works, where they fit, and how they think ethically and morally. These views can be human
centred, earth–centered or a combination of the two(Tucker and Grim, 1994).
Human–Centered and Life–Centered Environmental Worldviews
Human–centered views consider humans to be the most important species and stewards(a person in charge of looking after something) of the earth.
Planetary management worldview

Humans are thought to be the dominant species. They believe that humans should manage the earth, all other life forms have some sort of instrumental

My Love Of The Environment
I have always been concerned about the environment. In elementary school, I made posters encouraging students to recycle and hung them up
everywhere. I organized my first protest when I was nine. My best friend and I made picket signs to object the trimming of trees on our street. I didn't
realize at the time it was to protect the power lines, but the good intentions were there.
My concern for protecting the environment (and every tree on the street) has only grown stronger as I've grown up; now, I'm choosing to major in
Environmental Studies because I know that the environment is all we have. Humans are fully dependent on natural resources, but we continue to
overfish oceans, chop down rainforests, and use harmful practices like fracking to extract oil from the earth. We're so focused on short term financial
gains that we forget the fact that our environment influences our entire lives; every poor choice we make now will spiral out to impact future
generations. I want to major in environmental studies so that I can better understand the complex relationships between humans and the environment,
and find ways for humans to take care of the environment instead of exploiting it.
My love of the environment has always been supported by my strong interest in politics. I am especially drawn to the interdisciplinary nature of this
