Reflection On Depression
Depression Who am I to judge? Occasionally, everyone will feel sad or upset when struggling with obstacles in their life. However, within a
couple of days these feelings may pass. According to the Mayo clinic, "depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness
and loss of interest." When I lost my ill husband, I experienced a depressive disorder that interfered with my daily life. My normal functions to
move on didn't make sense. While he was alive he took care of all the bills and insured that I was taking care of. It was a scary feeling to pick up the
pieces where he left off and to continue living in this foreign country. The pain of this depressive order caused me to push anyone away from me,

Soldiers coming home from a long deployment may experience a change in behavior such as an angry outburst. This behavior could be caused over
a simple matter as paying bills. Before the soldier went to war, they had one way and when they got back their love ones is doing another way. In
turn, this may cause feelings of hopelessness and/or worthlessness because they feel that they are not needed. With as many as 170,000 men and
women now returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, most will be going through psychological problems such as PTSD, anxiety, mood disorders and
depression (Tyre 2004). A person may have trouble thinking or concentrating that could affect the way they make decisions. An individual may have
trouble remembering things because of the lack of sleep or loses interest in most normal activities such as hobbies or sports. A person may typically
have anxiety, agitation or restlessness caused by extreme stress. Sudden changes in appetite or weight loss or gain may be symptoms to look for in an
individual with a major depressive disorder. With any illness such as depression a person may have suicidal thoughts or suicidal attempts that are not
noticeable to even their friends or loved ones. However, understanding some of the causes or risk

Depression is one of the most common psychological problems, affecting nearly everyone through either personal experience or through depression in a
family member. The cost in human suffering cannot be estimated. Depression can interfere with normal functioning, and frequently causes problems
with work, social and family adjustment. It causes pain and suffering not only to those who have a disorder, but also to those who care about them.
Serious depression can destroy family life as well as the life of the depressed person.

Social learning factors also explain why psychological problems appear to occur more often in family members, from generation to generation. If a
child grows up in a depressed environment, in which discouragement is common and encouragement is rare, that child will develop a disadvantage
to depression as well. A serious loss, relationship problems, work, stress, family crisis, financial setback, or any unwelcome life change can trigger a
depressive event. Very often, a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors are involved in the development of depressive
disorders, as well as other psychological problems. When you feel depressed, and don't know where to turn, talk to someone who can help.... A

Sometimes people get seriously depressed after something like divorce in the family, major financial problems, someone you love dying, a messed
up home life, or breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend. Other times, depression just happens. Often teenagers react to the pain of depression by
getting into trouble: trouble with alcohol, drugs, or sex; trouble with school or bad grades; problems with family or friends. This is another reason why
it's important to get treatment for depression before it leads to other trouble.
A lot of depressed people, especially teenagers, also have problems with alcohol or other drugs. (Alcohol is a drug, too.)

Depression is much more than a word with a definition. It is a constant feeling of sadness, guilt, and worthlessness. All genders and ages can
experience what it is like to be depressed; however, the earliest signs of depression begin with youngest of the human population. From the day a child
is born, the environment, the people, and everything else around them, begins to influence their decisions and impact the way they will live their life. A
child is the first naГЇve human being to be influenced by external forces. From every experience, to every event, the child participates or does not
participate in, influences their thoughts and emotions. Their brain is not quite mature enough to understand and organize everything that is happening
internally and externally around them. Therefore, children are the first human beings to be susceptible to mental illness such as depression. Studies have
found that symptoms of depression have developed early in many people's lives (Depression in Children, 2016). This is why it is so crucial to
understand not only the symptoms, but also the gender differences and causes that have contributed to depression in children at such an early age and
the methods of treatment that can be used.
Depression essentially is a term that relates to a clinically diagnosed patient with a mental illness. According to the World Health Organization,

Argumentative Essay On Depression
"Depression is the inability to construct a future." When a person is struggling through a dark time in their life they are unable to look positively
towards the future. This may affect anyone close to them and anyone who is planning a future with them. The theme is evident by the history of
depression, the signs, symptoms and the treatments available and the struggles depression creates in the individual's daily life. The earliest
discovery of Depression came in the second millennium B.C. They first called this illness melancholia and it first appeared in the writings of
Mesopotamian. Depression in this time was that people were possessed with demons and a priest had to attend to them to try and rid of the
demons causing this illness. They believed depression was a spiritual illness not a physical one. Many different doctors had ways they treated
people with this mental illness. Roman and Greek doctors believed this was a psychological and a biological illness. They treated depression with
gymnastics, massage, special diets, music and baths one kind of bath was a mix of poppy extract and donkeys milk to alleviate symptoms. The
Greek physicians were called Hippocrates and they said that if you had melancholia you had to much black bile in your spleen. They used
bloodletting which removed blood from the body, bathing, exercise, and dieting to treat melancholia. As the years went on people believed that the
mental illness was inherited and the people with these mental illnesses ended up homeless or in an institute. The theories that were established from
the past were very helpful to study which treatments would work best for people today. Depression is a complex disorder which involves many
systems of the body. It disrupts sleep, changes your appetite and causes weight loss or weight gain. Everyone experiences a sad time in their lives
and has no positive outlook at the future. This does not portray personal weakness but it also can not be something that can be wished away. Studies
have shown that the best way for people with depression to get help is cognitive behavioral therapy which studies problematic thought patterns without
the use of medicine. Depression occurs more in women than in men because of

Major Depressive Disorder Essay
Major Depressive Disorder or MDD is a very common clinical condition that affects millions of people every year. According to the Agency for
Health Care Policy & Research, " depression is under diagnosed & untreated by most medical doctors, despite the fact that it can almost always be
treated successfully.
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM–IV); A person who suffers from this disorder must have
a depressed mood, or have lost interest in things that would have normally brought them pleasure; for a minimum of two weeks. This must be different

The treatments for depression can be antidepressants, psychotherapy, or a combination of both.
Treatments using anti–depressants is well documented, but there are very few studies documenting only the use of psychotherapy. However, in one
study done using the Cognitive–behavioral analysis system of psychotherapy (CBASP) as a maintenance treatment, the overall findings show that
psychotherapy in itself can be successful. " There were 82 patients who were treated with CBASP long term. Patients were chosen at random to reduce
their treatment to monthly or to an observational status. The patients, only treated monthly with CBASP, showed a smaller amount of reoccurring
symptoms then the patients in the observational status. These findings support the use of only CBASP as a maintenance treatment for depression."
(Klein, 2004)
Psychotherapy itself comes in many forms, and is based on many different psychological models. Adlerian therapy on the growth model, Gestalt
therapy integrates the body and mind, psychoanalytic therapy focuses on the first six years of life, Reality therapy teaches people to control the world
around them, and Rational and Cognitive therapy, deals with the cognitive and moral state of the patient. Any one of these could be chosen as a
treatment option, but for the purpose of this paper, I will focus on a form of Humanistic Therapy.
Humanistic Therapy is a process by which an individual is

Everybody, at a certain point in life, feels blue or sad. The feeling of being sad is usually short–termed and it passes away in the matter of hours or
days. Depression is a common, but a very serious illness, so it is really important for the person who has it to seek for treatment. In majority of cases,
depression is curable, and that is why people should ask for help when they are in need. There are many ways to effectively treat depression like
medications, psychotherapies, and other methods. Furthermore, there are several forms of depressive disorders: major depressive disorder (major

It can be characterized by a fusion of various symptoms, which interfere with people in a way where they are not able to work, sleep, study, eat, and
enjoy their everyday activities. (Moussavi, 2007) ("Depression") All in all, major depressive disorder prevents people from functioning normally. It
can occur only once in a lifetime as a single episode, but most of the time people have multiple episodes. Furthermore, another form of depressive
disorders is dysthymic disorder, or dysthymia. The thing that particularly characterizes dysthymia are long–term symptoms, which have to be at least
two years long. Those symptoms are usually not severe like the ones in major depression, but they can prevent people from living a normal life.
Minor depression is the third big form of depressive disorders. It is characterized by having symptoms for at least two weeks, which do not fully
meet the criteria to be considered as major depression. It is very recommendable for people with minor depression to treat it as soon as possible
because it can develop into major depression. (Moussavi, 2007) Nevertheless, there are a few forms of depression that are unique, so people cannot
really agree on how to characterize and define those particular forms. One of them is psychotic depression, which is a combination of severe
depression and a form of psychosis such as delusions and hallucinations. Secondly, postpartum depression

Essay on Depression
The common usage of the word "depression" isn't usually in reference to a clinical disease. People most often use it to mean that they have "the blues"
or they're just feeling "down." Unfortunately, the disease depression isn't so simple. It's not something that one can just `get over'. It's usually
something that must be treated with therapy, and in some cases medication must also be used. There are many different types of the mental illness;
clinical depression, bipolar disorder (otherwise known as manic depressive) and dysthymia.
In the period of one year, about 9.5% of Americans, which is about 18.8 million adults will suffer from one of these types of a "depressive disorder."

About 10–20% of patients with bipolar disorder commit suicide. There are two different forms of this specific depressive illness. There is the
unipolar (major depressive), and bipolar (manic). After that, bipolar can be broken down to two more specifications, bipolar I and bipolar II. Bipolar
I is a "recurrent mood disorder" which has about one or more manic episodes. Bipolar II is a major depression with about one manic episode. Bipolar
disorder doesn't discriminate between men and women and studies show that it is a genetic trait.
Researchers believe that genetics play a large role in depression. In an article from the American Journal of Medical Genetics, printed on July 2nd,
researchers said that they found a number of chromosomal areas that hold "genetic keys to a variety of mental
illnesses." (source 3) Although depression is prominent in families, passing from generation to generation, it is also possible for it to show up in
families without a history of it. People who are pessimistic, overloaded and stressed and who have very low self esteem are prone to developing
depression as well.
Doctors also believe that there are different physical changes that can lead to depression. For example, when a person experiences stroke, or heart
attack, cancer or
other disabling diseases, then they are prone to developing a depressive illness. Also

A Short Speech On Depression
Today I will be talking about depression and the matters of it. What is depression you may ask? Depression is a common and serious medical
illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. It makes you less motivated to do anything, and people may become
an introvert if they aren't already one. About 20 percent of all teens experience depression before they reach adulthood. Between 10 to 15 percent
suffer from symptoms at any one time. There are different types of depression such as Major Depression, Persistent Depressive Disorder, Bipolar
Disorder, Seasonal Affective Disorder, Psychotic Depression, Postpartum Depression, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), and Situational
Depression but the most common type of depression is Dysthymia.

Why do people become depressed? Well that doesn't have just one answer. There are multiple reasons as to why people become depressed such as

billions of dollars spent in revue on treating depression (Chisholm, Sweeny, and Sheehan, 2016), exercise used as treatment in reaction to mental

increase of VO2max and minutes engaged in physical activity. Overall, the results suggest that exercise can potentially be used to increase the quality
of life, physical fitness level, and improve mental state. HeladГіttГr, Hallgren, Ekblom, Forsell (2016) sought to find an optimal dosage of exercise to
elicit positive responses in those diagnosed with depression using three varying intensities. With frequency and duration kept consistent, 620
participants, including ages 18 to 67, were randomly assigned different treatment groups. These included (1) continuing their usual treatment, (2) light
exercise like yoga, (3) moderate aerobic exercise, and (4) vigorous aerobic exercise. The training program lasted for 12 weeks, requiring subjects to
exercise 55 minutes 3 times a week. The researchers measured depression severity at baseline and post–treatment while monitoring heart rate during
every session using a monitor. Following the conclusion of the study, the results indicated that depression severity decreased in al exercise groups.
However, the optimal dosage for exercise prescription remains uncertain. These findings suggest that light exercise, such as yoga, were more beneficial
than the other intensities

Biological Causes Of Depression Essay
Depression is a recurring condition; it often presents itself with deep feelings of melancholy and loss of attentiveness in many things which inhibits
people with depression from experiencing pleasure (Carr, 2012). Clinical features of depression include a negative cognitive style which maintains
attention on negative aspects, ''somatic symptoms, psychomotor retardation...and a deterioration in relationships'' (Carr, 2012, page 203). There are
many explanations for depression and treatments ranging from CBT to antidepressants, have been developed with the help of these. Biological factors
suggest that depression is 40% heritable; a genetic vulnerability to depression consists of genes which affects the capability of serotonin (Carr, 2012).

Research has found that inflammation can increase the possibility of a depressive episode (Dantzer, O'Connor, Freund, Johnson, & Kelley, 2008) and
this may be a factor which contributes to the prevalence of depression in arthritis. The association between rheumatoid arthritis and depression could
also be linked to pain as research has found that pain can increase vulnerability to developing depression, especially pain of the joints (Gerrits, van
Oppen, van Marwijk, Penninx, & van der Horst, 2014; Dickens, McGowan, Clark–Carter, & Creed, 2002). This makes people with rheumatoid arthritis
more likely to experience depression as arthritis consists of pain in the joins. However, according to this, any chronic illness which brings pain will

Abstract On Depression
Depression have become a major problem in our society today. People who haven't experience depression will not understand how it feel and what it
can do to a person. Many people also doesn't understand what depression is, or how it can related to suicidal ideation. In fact, studies have documented
that the majority of young suicide victims had depression at the time of death and most suicide survivors were diagnosed with symptoms of clinical
depression at the time of their attempt (Mojs, Biederman, GЕ‚owacka, Strzelecki, Ziemska, Samborski 2015). It can affect anyone, from young
adolescents to college students to the elderly people. There are many reasons that can make someone have major depression. Such as financial
problems, family problems, social problems, school, work, etc. These stressors in our daily life can cause anxiety which can increase our stress level
significantly, which then can lead to depression. A research said that anxiety disorder have a high comorbidity with depression and that anxiety occur
prior to the onset of depressive disorders in many individuals (Batterham, Christensen, Calear 2013). People who experience depression must find way
to cope with depression and know how to get help in order to prevent suicidal ideation. The people surroundings, friends and family, must also find
ways to recognize the symptoms of depression, and show understandings in order to help those suffering. This research project will help people

The complex topic of depression can be looked at from various perspectives. Two such perspectives are the biological view and the psychological view.
The main focus of this paper will be from the biological side.
The symptoms of mental illness creep over you like a cold damp fog. The number of people at probable risk of depression is climbing, up from 5.2
percent in 1994/95 to 7.1 percent in 2000/01 (Hawaleshka, 38). One particular subject, Sarah Hamid started feeling the symptoms of depression at age
18. Sarah got to the point where she was sleeping 12–16 hours a day and crying uncontrollably. "It got to the point where I was driving home one day

It is thought that because of the lack of chemicals, too few messages get transmitted between neurons and depressive symptoms occur (Nestler, 1).
New technology allows researchers to take pictures of the brain that show activity levels in the brain. These imagining techniques, such as functional
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (f–MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET), scan the brain. The scans create images which show the amount of
activity in different parts of the brain. Some studies with these kinds of techniques have suggested that the patterns of activation in the brains of
depressed people are different than those who are not. These tests can help doctors and researchers lean more about depression and other mental
illnesses (Nestler, 2).
Failure to recognize and treat depressive disorder leaves the patient to suffer and to become a costly user of health care services. Depression that is
not treated significantly increases the risk of mortality. Depressive disorders can also be linked to patients with Parkinson's disease, Dementia, or
Alzheimer's disease. Treatment of the depressive disorder may enable the patient to achieve better functioning in activities, daily living; possibly to a
degree that placement in a nursing facility may be delayed or avoided (McCahill, 1).
Sarah Hamid got lucky in her case, because she knew she needed assistance with depression and seeked help for it. Her doctor

Major life stressors, chronic illness, medications, and relationship or work problems may cause Dysthymia. Now that you know a little bit more about
Dysthymia, you are probably wondering, what are some of the symptoms? Some of the symptoms of Dysthymia are: sadness or depressed mood most
of the day or almost everyday, loss of enjoyment of things that were once pleasurable, major change in weight ( weight loss or gaining weight),
insomnia or excessive sleep throughout the day, Fatigue, feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness or guilt almost everyday, thoughts about death or
suicide. Now that you know some of the symptoms of Dysthymia, you might wonder, How are you diagnosed with it? A mental health specialist or a
psychologist, generally makes the diagnosis based on the symptoms of the person. There is no blood, x–ray, or any other lab test that can find out if
you have Dysthymia. Now that that's clear, the final question is... Is it curable!? Although Dysthymia is a severe illness; it is also very treatable. As
with any chronic illnesses, early diagnosis and medical treatment may reduce the intensity and duration of symptoms, and also reduce the likelihood
of it developing into major depression. To treat Dysthymia doctors may use psychotherapy, more commonly known as, seeing a therapist, along
with taking antidepressants. Dysthymia can be treated by a primary care physician. Now, last but not least is "Genetic Depression". It has been
known that depressive illness can run in families. Genes that we inherit from our parents can determine lots of things such as gender, hair and eye
color. Our genes also determine which illnesses we may be vulnerable to at some point in our lives. Every cell in our body contains around 50,000 to
100,000 genes. They are all made up of DNA ( deoxyribonucleic acid). Genes are located on chromosomes within the nucleus of

bipolar disorders run in families. Meaning if your father or mother had it you have a high chance of getting it yourself. Most people who are
depressed are women. They may be biologically induced depression. Meaning that there is a lack of or too much of a chemical or protein. Or it may
be that women learn social roles that favor feelings of helplessness. Because women in trouble are more likely to seek professional assistance than
men, statistics report that more people who are depressed are mostly women. The depressive disorders are among the most treatable in psychiatry. The
usual treatment in modern practice involves administration of a drug plus supportive psychotherapy. Basically going to a psychiatrist and talking to

inhibitors. The last one requires the patient to follow a special diet because the drugs react to tryamine.

psychotherapies can be used. For the milder, less serious cases, psychotherapy may be enough by itself. Antidepressants are used for symptom relief
and psychotherapy is used to learn more effective ways to deal with everyday problems through talking. In most cases psychotherapy is done in ten to
twenty week sessions. Therapists focus on the patients' disturbed personal relationships. In cases where the patients' symptoms don't progress with in

Reflection On Depression

  • 1. Reflection On Depression Depression Who am I to judge? Occasionally, everyone will feel sad or upset when struggling with obstacles in their life. However, within a couple of days these feelings may pass. According to the Mayo clinic, "depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest." When I lost my ill husband, I experienced a depressive disorder that interfered with my daily life. My normal functions to move on didn't make sense. While he was alive he took care of all the bills and insured that I was taking care of. It was a scary feeling to pick up the pieces where he left off and to continue living in this foreign country. The pain of this depressive order caused me to push anyone away from me, because I didn't...show more content... Soldiers coming home from a long deployment may experience a change in behavior such as an angry outburst. This behavior could be caused over a simple matter as paying bills. Before the soldier went to war, they had one way and when they got back their love ones is doing another way. In turn, this may cause feelings of hopelessness and/or worthlessness because they feel that they are not needed. With as many as 170,000 men and women now returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, most will be going through psychological problems such as PTSD, anxiety, mood disorders and depression (Tyre 2004). A person may have trouble thinking or concentrating that could affect the way they make decisions. An individual may have trouble remembering things because of the lack of sleep or loses interest in most normal activities such as hobbies or sports. A person may typically have anxiety, agitation or restlessness caused by extreme stress. Sudden changes in appetite or weight loss or gain may be symptoms to look for in an individual with a major depressive disorder. With any illness such as depression a person may have suicidal thoughts or suicidal attempts that are not noticeable to even their friends or loved ones. • 2. Essay on Depression Depression. Depression is one of the most common psychological problems, affecting nearly everyone through either personal experience or through depression in a family member. The cost in human suffering cannot be estimated. Depression can interfere with normal functioning, and frequently causes problems with work, social and family adjustment. It causes pain and suffering not only to those who have a disorder, but also to those who care about them. Serious depression can destroy family life as well as the life of the depressed person. Impact of Depression:  Causes tremendous emotional pain  Disrupts the lives of millions of people  Adversely affects the lives of families and friends ...show more content... Social learning factors also explain why psychological problems appear to occur more often in family members, from generation to generation. If a child grows up in a depressed environment, in which discouragement is common and encouragement is rare, that child will develop a disadvantage to depression as well. A serious loss, relationship problems, work, stress, family crisis, financial setback, or any unwelcome life change can trigger a depressive event. Very often, a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors are involved in the development of depressive disorders, as well as other psychological problems. When you feel depressed, and don't know where to turn, talk to someone who can help.... A Psychologist. Sometimes people get seriously depressed after something like divorce in the family, major financial problems, someone you love dying, a messed up home life, or breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend. Other times, depression just happens. Often teenagers react to the pain of depression by getting into trouble: trouble with alcohol, drugs, or sex; trouble with school or bad grades; problems with family or friends. This is another reason why it's important to get treatment for depression before it leads to other trouble. A lot of depressed people, especially teenagers, also have problems with alcohol or other drugs. (Alcohol is a drug, too.)

  • 4. Depression is much more than a word with a definition. It is a constant feeling of sadness, guilt, and worthlessness. All genders and ages can experience what it is like to be depressed; however, the earliest signs of depression begin with youngest of the human population. From the day a child is born, the environment, the people, and everything else around them, begins to influence their decisions and impact the way they will live their life. A child is the first naГЇve human being to be influenced by external forces. From every experience, to every event, the child participates or does not participate in, influences their thoughts and emotions. Their brain is not quite mature enough to understand and organize everything that is happening internally and externally around them. Therefore, children are the first human beings to be susceptible to mental illness such as depression. Studies have found that symptoms of depression have developed early in many people's lives (Depression in Children, 2016). This is why it is so crucial to understand not only the symptoms, but also the gender differences and causes that have contributed to depression in children at such an early age and the methods of treatment that can be used. Depression essentially is a term that relates to a clinically diagnosed patient with a mental illness. • 7. Argumentative Essay On Depression "Depression is the inability to construct a future." When a person is struggling through a dark time in their life they are unable to look positively towards the future. This may affect anyone close to them and anyone who is planning a future with them. The theme is evident by the history of depression, the signs, symptoms and the treatments available and the struggles depression creates in the individual's daily life. The earliest discovery of Depression came in the second millennium B.C. They first called this illness melancholia and it first appeared in the writings of Mesopotamian. Depression in this time was that people were possessed with demons and a priest had to attend to them to try and rid of the demons causing this illness. They believed depression was a spiritual illness not a physical one. Many different doctors had ways they treated people with this mental illness. Roman and Greek doctors believed this was a psychological and a biological illness. They treated depression with gymnastics, massage, special diets, music and baths one kind of bath was a mix of poppy extract and donkeys milk to alleviate symptoms. The Greek physicians were called Hippocrates and they said that if you had melancholia you had to much black bile in your spleen. They used bloodletting which removed blood from the body, bathing, exercise, and dieting to treat melancholia. As the years went on people believed that the mental illness was inherited and the people with these mental illnesses ended up homeless or in an institute. The theories that were established from the past were very helpful to study which treatments would work best for people today. Depression is a complex disorder which involves many systems of the body. It disrupts sleep, changes your appetite and causes weight loss or weight gain. Everyone experiences a sad time in their lives and has no positive outlook at the future. This does not portray personal weakness but it also can not be something that can be wished away. Studies have shown that the best way for people with depression to get help is cognitive behavioral therapy which studies problematic thought patterns without the use of medicine. According to the Agency for Health Care Policy & Research, " depression is under diagnosed & untreated by most medical doctors, despite the fact that it can almost always be treated successfully. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM–IV); A person who suffers from this disorder must have a depressed mood, or have lost interest in things that would have normally brought them pleasure; for a minimum of two weeks. This must be different then the person's normal behaviors, and it may not be caused by a general medical condition. (American Psychiatric Association, 1994)...show more content... The treatments for depression can be antidepressants, psychotherapy, or a combination of both. Treatments using anti–depressants is well documented, but there are very few studies documenting only the use of psychotherapy. However, in one study done using the Cognitive–behavioral analysis system of psychotherapy (CBASP) as a maintenance treatment, the overall findings show that psychotherapy in itself can be successful. " There were 82 patients who were treated with CBASP long term. Patients were chosen at random to reduce their treatment to monthly or to an observational status. The patients, only treated monthly with CBASP, showed a smaller amount of reoccurring symptoms then the patients in the observational status. These findings support the use of only CBASP as a maintenance treatment for depression." (Klein, 2004) Psychotherapy itself comes in many forms, and is based on many different psychological models. Adlerian therapy on the growth model, Gestalt therapy integrates the body and mind, psychoanalytic therapy focuses on the first six years of life, Reality therapy teaches people to control the world around them, and Rational and Cognitive therapy, deals with the cognitive and moral state of the patient. Any one of these could be chosen as a treatment option, but for the purpose of this paper, I will focus on a form of Humanistic Therapy. Depression is a common, but a very serious illness, so it is really important for the person who has it to seek for treatment. In majority of cases, depression is curable, and that is why people should ask for help when they are in need. It can be characterized by a fusion of various symptoms, which interfere with people in a way where they are not able to work, sleep, study, eat, and enjoy their everyday activities. (Moussavi, 2007) ("Depression") All in all, major depressive disorder prevents people from functioning normally. It can occur only once in a lifetime as a single episode, but most of the time people have multiple episodes. Furthermore, another form of depressive disorders is dysthymic disorder, or dysthymia. The thing that particularly characterizes dysthymia are long–term symptoms, which have to be at least two years long. Those symptoms are usually not severe like the ones in major depression, but they can prevent people from living a normal life. Minor depression is the third big form of depressive disorders. It is characterized by having symptoms for at least two weeks, which do not fully meet the criteria to be considered as major depression. It is very recommendable for people with minor depression to treat it as soon as possible because it can develop into major depression. (Moussavi, 2007) Nevertheless, there are a few forms of depression that are unique, so people cannot really agree on how to characterize and define those particular forms. One of them is psychotic depression, which is a combination of severe depression and a form of psychosis such as delusions and hallucinations. People most often use it to mean that they have "the blues" or they're just feeling "down." Unfortunately, the disease depression isn't so simple. It's not something that one can just `get over'. It's usually something that must be treated with therapy, and in some cases medication must also be used. There are many different types of the mental illness; clinical depression, bipolar disorder (otherwise known as manic depressive) and dysthymia. There are two different forms of this specific depressive illness. There is the unipolar (major depressive), and bipolar (manic). After that, bipolar can be broken down to two more specifications, bipolar I and bipolar II. Bipolar I is a "recurrent mood disorder" which has about one or more manic episodes. Bipolar II is a major depression with about one manic episode. Bipolar disorder doesn't discriminate between men and women and studies show that it is a genetic trait. Researchers believe that genetics play a large role in depression. In an article from the American Journal of Medical Genetics, printed on July 2nd, researchers said that they found a number of chromosomal areas that hold "genetic keys to a variety of mental illnesses." (source 3) Although depression is prominent in families, passing from generation to generation, it is also possible for it to show up in families without a history of it. People who are pessimistic, overloaded and stressed and who have very low self esteem are prone to developing depression as well. Doctors also believe that there are different physical changes that can lead to depression. For example, when a person experiences stroke, or heart attack, cancer or other disabling diseases, then they are prone to developing a depressive illness. Also

These included (1) continuing their usual treatment, (2) light exercise like yoga, (3) moderate aerobic exercise, and (4) vigorous aerobic exercise. The training program lasted for 12 weeks, requiring subjects to exercise 55 minutes 3 times a week. The researchers measured depression severity at baseline and post–treatment while monitoring heart rate during every session using a monitor. Following the conclusion of the study, the results indicated that depression severity decreased in al exercise groups. However, the optimal dosage for exercise prescription remains uncertain. Now that I am older I know not to use that term so loosely because depression is a disorder that is very serious. According to the Mayo Clinic Depression, also known as major depressive disorder is a mood disorder that causes a feeling of sadness and a loss of interest. Depression can cause physical problems because it affects how you think along with how you act. For example, you may not want to do activities that you normally would, due to this disorder. Depression does not have a specific age or gender, it can happen to anyone. According to do something.org 1 and 4 adults suffer from depression episodes before the age of 24. Also, women are two times as likely to suffer from depression than men. In addition, more than 350 million people of all ages suffer from depression. In our first week of class we read J.K. Rowling's commencement speech to the graduating class of Harvard. In this speech she says something that resonated with me deeply. She says, "I had no idea how far the tunnel extended, and for a long time, any light at the end of it was a hope rather than a reality." The author has been very open with her mental illness before the fame, and she contributes her depression for some of the memorable details in her Harry Potter series. This is about my own tunnel and the light at the end that's changing from a hope to a reality. Since middle school I've had a very long and hard battle with an affinity of mental illnesses, from PTSD and depression to anxiety disorders and bipolar disorder. Anyone would think the older you get the easier it is to cope and hopefully dissipate into just a word. Years of therapy, medicine and self–medication shows next to no improvements as of late and that's failure in and of itself. In the process of getting worse while getting better I've been hospitalized four times emerging with a different medicine cycle and a new diagnosis. Since the tender age of 13 I've been on so many different pills that the doctors don't bother to ask they just check the chart that's probably longer than my forearm. I believe the first time Get more content on HelpWriting.net

New technology allows researchers to take pictures of the brain that show activity levels in the brain. These imagining techniques, such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (f–MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET), scan the brain. The scans create images which show the amount of activity in different parts of the brain. Some studies with these kinds of techniques have suggested that the patterns of activation in the brains of depressed people are different than those who are not. These tests can help doctors and researchers lean more about depression and other mental illnesses (Nestler, 2). Failure to recognize and treat depressive disorder leaves the patient to suffer and to become a costly user of health care services.
