INTRODUCTION Elder abuse is present in our society; however, it has been a hidden problem and under recognized by our community. It is
really challenging for people to understand the severity of this problem unless one encounters it in one's life. Society began to really acknowledge
this issue because of the cases that have been reported, while there are many cases that still go unreported. There are several forms of elder abuse
that are reportable to a healthcare provider; however, many cases are still left unreported and elder victims continue to suffer from mistreatment. The
seniors that surround us have contributed to our community and to the great things that we now have. These people should be recognized and
protected in all areas of life instead of being mistreated. Elder abuse is a social problem, in our society we have been taught from a young age to
respect our elders and treat them with dignity and respect. While elders should be honored they end up being one of the most vulnerable populations

As described in Module 13, there are several theories that could describe the cause of elder abuse. One of the theories describes stress as a leading

The report of elder abuse is no exception. Though it may be more difficult to get an actual statement of abuse from an older adult, possibly due to
their loved one or care giver being present, there are ways for nurses to give patients a chance to report the abuse. For example, conducting a
discussion of the patient's health history in private, including safety questions and questions concerning abuse, may help the patient be more
willing to report any type of abuse they are facing. Asking questions such as, "Are you in a relationship where you feel unsafe?" or, "Are you in a
relationship where you are being harmed by someone?" gives these patients a chance to report the abuse without pressuring them to come out and
say it on their own (Daly et al., 2012). Also, giving them the opportunity to just simply say "yes" or "no" to these questions helps nurses determine

In my family there are some individuals who have chosen to be emotionally abusive to my grandmother. There have been occasions where she has

as private homes, nursing homes, or other types of long term care centers. About 3.2 million American elders reside in nursing homes. One study
interviewed 2,000 nursing home residents and they reported that 44% said that had been abused and 95% said they had been neglected or seen
another resident being neglected. Elders who experience abuse, even in a modest form, are at a much higher risk of death. Research also shows that
victims of elder abuse have significantly higher levels of psychological distress and lower perceived self–efficiency. Additionally, the victims of elder
violence have other health problems, like bone or joint issues, digestive problems, depression or anxiety, high blood pressure, chronic pain and heart

Elder Abuse Elder abuse is not recognized in my culture and is recently been advertised more by the Canadian government. As my grandparents'
health is starting to decline, I have been told that they are being pressured to get their wills done. Recently, my uncle lost his job. He has been under a
lot of financial strain. My aunt has been trying to save on their energy bills. She has requested my grandmother to watch television without the lights
on. She also told her to listen to her television programs with a very low volume. Hearing this from my grandparents made me upset, since their vision
and hearing has reduced as they age. It is not right to have them live in these conditions. Also, they have been guilted to treat the family out to dinner
