This document discusses Shawn Keen's experience in a kinesiology class. Some key points:
- Shawn enjoyed writing assignments that allowed self-reflection, like writing their own eulogy or journals exploring their inner thoughts and values.
- Their favorite assignment was a service learning project working with animals, which allowed them to serve others and feel accomplished.
- Self-assessments done throughout the class showed areas of growth in developing emotional intelligence and self-awareness.
- Lessons learned include managing procrastination better and using available resources when struggling.
1. Shawn Keen
Kinesiology
BUBBA, NEVER GIVE IN, GIVE UP, OR THINK YOU CAN’T. ALWAYS STICK TO YOUR CORE BELIEFS OF FAITH, FAMILY,
AND COUNTRY. REMEMBER THAT AT THE END OF THIS LIFE THE GOAL IS NOT TO HAVE BEEN THE FAVORITE, BUT TO
HAVE ALL PEOPLE THAT SURROUNDED YOU MAKE A SIMPLE STATEMENT OF “ HE LIVED TO SERVE AND DEVELOP
OTHERS AS BEST AS HE COULD, AND WOULDN’T EVER EXPECT ANYTHING IN RETURN.”
2. Assignments!
My first most appreciated assignment this semester was writing our own eulogy. I enjoyed writing this because it was a
reflection and time to really think about how I want to be viewed when I am gone. I also really enjoyed this piece in particular
as it was during a dark time this semester and made me think and reflect on great memories. There is no feeling that I can
describe like being brought out of a dark hole and feeling better.
There were a multitude of assignments that were essentially how you “feel” about yourself and one was the inner critic, inner
guide, and inner defender journal entry. I enjoyed writing this one because it made me reflect on decisions and how I actually
genuinely communicate to myself. I have a tendency to be a little harsh on myself but really understanding why was an eye
opener. I also enjoyed learning through my classmates how they may handle certain situations when we applied our thoughts
in class.
My absolute favorite was definitely the service learning project. I really enjoyed doing this as it was just great fun. I spent a lot
of time with animals of which may not have anything to do with my career, but is part of who I am. I live to serve, and
spending that time with those animals really made me feel like I was accomplishing something. It also inspired me to not just
do it for school but to continue serving at the DAWG (Denison Animal Welfare Group) as I now have a reason to apply some
time to something bigger than myself. Seeing pups actually helps me with my anger and depression issues more than I can
explain.
3. Journals!
The chapter 2 journal I titled self critique for a reason. When we were going through this chapter I really recognized the harsh
level and intent I tend to put on myself. It was nice to hear a different viewpoint when making a scenario up or using a real
life one via the inner guide, defender, and critic.
Chapter 7 journal I titled integrity and it was a journal about exactly that. Being that integrity is one of my most key values I
enjoyed writing about why it is. It also was a little difficult to write as it was a story about coming short in that particular value
at times.
My by far favorite journal was chapter 3 journal where we had written about accomplishing our goals in the moment of it
happening. I literally pictured it and seen it. This was an absolute tension relief during a time this year in which I struggle so it
was awesome to have a positive vibe in all the negative.
4. Favorite week of class!
My favorite week of class was definitely the second week when we started
getting into the book and learning different things about our own thought
process’ that we may not have known before. I was very excited to be a college
student for the first time, and also was very ready to take on a new challenge
since leaving the military. I am pretty sure I have kept the same enthusiasm
throughout the course and am pretty excited to see what the future holds.
5. Lessons here and there!
First harsh lesson this semester that I will continue to abide in is
procrastination. Even though at times it was just a planned to do the day
something was due it often was added stress.
The second huge lesson that will continue to be a carryover throughout
my time in college is using the available resources when I am struggling.
The third lesson is to be sure all materials and books required are correct
from day one as it wasn’t the case in either of my online classes.
6. Self assessment!
Accepting Personal Responsibility: First 72, End 76
Self motivation: First 75, End 79
Mastering self management: First 63, End 62
Employing interdependence: First 55, End 57
Gaining Self awareness: First 67, End 65
Adopting Lifelong Learning: First 69, End 71
Developing Emotional intelligence: First 37, End 45
Believing in myself: First 56, End 51
Throughout this exercise it was nice to get a real feel for where I am at when it comes to learning styles
and accountability. I knew I was harsh on myself but didn’t realize how much of an effect that can have
when it comes to learning. I also learned that there are multiple factors that go into learning and absorbing
the information that is being taught, things like mood, approach to the class, and how to manage time
better.
7. Type Focus!
This was a very interesting assignment. I learned multiple things that helped me continue on this path.
The first thing that caught my attention was how it brought me to a level in the assessment of a manager,
and care taker. Which I knew at the time but it elaborated that I have kind of a come one come all attitude
as well.
Definitely knew that I am a server, per my background however the level of servitude explained was more
than just someone who will put a little effort in but when it is something that I feel strongly about I will
always put 110%.
Research and development according to my assessment was another huge factor to which I believed was
more related to resourcing but apparently this assessment said that I will go into something as far as I can
to get the exact fit or as close as I possibly can.
The last thing it pointed out was having an entrepreneurial mind set which I do agree with but it also was
more along the lines of taking something and bringing it to a whole new level which now after thinking
about my goals is perfect.
