• On this google earth tour we will visit several major cities most being
capitals and looking at their road systems and why people might have
chosen to live their in the first place along with the challenges city
planners had to face to develop the city.
3. Washington D.C.
Task: Does the street lay out
change near the white house, if
yes then how?
Can you compare the road layout
with any other major city?
4. Berlin
Task: After the Second World
War Berlin was divided into east
and west with the USSR
controlling the east and the
Allied powers controlling the
west. The allies poured money
into the rebuilding of west Berlin
while the USSR used it for its
resources. Can you tell the
difference between east and
west Berlin now? Explain why or
why not.
5. Moscow
Task: How are Moscow and Berlin
similar and how are they different.
Compare the size, street layout,
natural barriers, etc.
6. New York
Task: Does New York have a grid road
system? If so why do you think it
does? What obstacles did city
planners and architects have to plan
around when developing New York?
7. Venice
Task: How are these city “streets”
Different and why do you think
people settled in this city/ what
are the geological advantages of
this city?
