1. Even though it is not obvious there is a difference between sound mixers and
sound editors. In simple terms, the sound editor is the person that almost creates
the sound. Whilst the sound mixers are the ones that figures out the best way to
actually use them and balance them so they sound right.
A foley artist is someone that creates audio effects for a film by using physical
props. As a foley artist on any production whether it being a game, a movie or a
animated film, they are responsible for very specific sounds. As foley artists, you
wont create audio for standard special effects, which includes sounds such as
explosions and any kind of background noises from cars as this is the domain of
audio engineers. To become a foley artist, you will need certain qualifications
such as a degree in Arts, Music, Electronics, Maths or sound technology. You will
also benefit from a post-graduate qualification in sound. There are also certain
technical skills you must posses to become a foley artist. Such as knowledge of
guitars. In particular acoustics. You have to have knowledge and good experience
in sound recording and audio postproduction. Be able to work and manipulate
sound for a moving image. In terms of personal skill, to become a foley artist you
will need to posses skills such as great visual skills, listening skills, be able to
work efficiently under pressure, have excellent communication skills, be able to
organise well and be able to work to very strict deadlines.
