Sound design 101: Training the ears for critical listening
October 18, 2019
The radio, television, music, and lm industries rely heavily on sound design to make projects
more successful. Musical artists and composers credit their success to their amazing sound
engineers, and lm and TV critics enjoy shows that play well with sound. What’s unknown to
many is the hard work audio engineers and sound designers put in their craft. DJ Rama.
Sound designers and audio engineers train
their ears to hear sound and sculpt sound
the way they want the listeners to hear it.
They employ critical listening in every mix
they do. Critical listening intends to spot the
physical details of an existing mix. The
physical details may include the blend of
the instruments, dynamic range, tone of
each instrument, and the stereo imaging. DJ Rama.
Training the ears to determine the technical
aspects of the sound helps in achieving
clarity in the mix. Through critical listening,
a sound engineer can have the
understanding how to spatially position
sounds and prevent overlapping
frequencies. Much like any kind of art and
design, most mixes are accomplished using
the perspective of the sound engineer. DJ
Rama.
With a job like this, it’s essential to keep the ears trained through critical and analytical
listening. Moreover, having the right equipment helps. When sound is heard truthfully using
high-end and well-balanced headphones or in-ear monitors, the job of a sound engineer is
made easy and delightful. Having the mind and ear for critical listening can’t be developed
overnight It takes hours of practice DJ Rama
