Key Takeaways: The Future of Houston in an AI World
1. BoyarMiller hosted a breakfast forum featuring lively discourse on Houston’s AI-driven future.
The banter centered around AI business trends, AI in energy and healthcare, AI workforce
training, AI job disruption and AI ethics and compliance.
In a panel moderated by Chairman Chris Hanslik, speakers included renowned Houston experts
in AI, healthcare, and energy:
Key Takeaways & Tips
› Don’t fear AI, embrace it. Learn how to
adapt with it.
› We are witnessing a transition from being data-
informed to knowledge-enabled.
› Forward-thinking businesses look at AI as a
new tool, rather than a magic box that will solve
everything. It is going to make things possible
or profitable because it compresses labor
costs. At the same time, we’ll discover new
responsibilities and new things to manage.
› Technology cycles require time for people to
understand the value and adopt. Using AI tools
with discernment is critical.
› Fun fact - a Yottabyte has 27 zeros after it.
› Medical use cases include improved
monitoring, diagnoses, and clinical decisions,
with more precise treatments based on AI
analysis of clinical trials and real world
outcomes. Life science use cases include
using AI for more intelligence to guide drug
development and clinical trial designs.
› AI use in energy revolves around engineering,
biology, and deep science areas as well as
fugitive carbon monitoring.
› AI is taxing the electrical grid. Its impact is 10x
that of Bitcoin mining. Some estimates place
the energy effort of training large language
models as more than the continent of Africa.

AI Limitations
“An employee who knows how to use AI to
enhance their role has the advantage.”
-Devlin Liles
“In biotech, we are focused on improved
decision-making to elevate care and
accelerate drug development. We are very far
from ever replacing humans in these areas.”
-Angela Holmes
“AI is going to transform diagnosis, treatment,
monitoring, and drug discovery. We’re seeing
trends. We’re using predictive analytics and
machine learning to crystallize insights
created by humans over many years. This
gets translated into code and models that
aid decision-making going forward.”
-Angela Holmes
“I may automate my accounting, but I will still
have to have a CPA sign off on it. AI is not
getting rid of humans, it’s just changing the
scale for humans.”
-Devlin Liles
“There are many examples where AI and ML
(machine learning) models have not been
trained on a diverse and representative
population. This has consequences. Data has
to be representative of the population it is
serving. There’s also data drift and the
challenge of keeping models up to date.”
-Angela Holmes
“AI tools are leap forwards that are going
to disrupt in many places. This comes as we
realize the quality isn’t what we
thought it was going to be.”
-Scott Gale
THE FUTURE OF HOUSTON IN AN AI WORLD
“Houston is largely driven by three large-
scale, risk-averse groups — aerospace,
medical and energy. It is uniquely
positioned in that the workforce
possesses hard skills in engineering,
manufacturing, and technology.”

The Future of Houston and AI
“Houston is receiving billions of dollars in grant
money to fund new cancer therapeutics. The
city is well-positioned as an emerging leader
in cell and gene therapy. This is largely the
work of MD Anderson pioneering oncology
treatments. What’s interesting about that
space is the biomanufacturing of cell and
gene therapy. These biologic products must
be manufactured close to where they’re
harvested and administered and Houston has
plans to build a biomanufacturing facility.”
-Angela Holmes
“I like to describe Houston as the city of
explorers scouting energy, space and the
human body. We also have the Port of
Houston and are hosting the largest sports
tech conference in the world next year. So
with the number of things that are happening
in and around the startup community in this
area, I’m optimistic.”
-Scott Gale
“The idea of fluid dynamics from oil and gas
applying to cardiovascular health — this
cross-pollination only happens in Houston
because it’s the only place that has the
density of those two industries.”
-Scott Gale
“Houston industries move geopolitics. When
you talk about the medical industry driving
innovation and healthcare outcomes, it can
significantly change the economic outlook for
the third world.”
