Position Description
General Description:
The Student Assistant provides support to the Resident Coordinator and to the professional staff of
Housing and Residence Life. The following expectations specify the nature of the position.
Qualifications:
The Student Assistant will:
Be able to communicate and interact positively and effectively with staff and students
Possess sound judgment and strong organizational skills
Possess the ability to function autonomously
Speak, read and write English fluently
Be able to accurately type at least 40 words per minute
Be familiar with word processing, computer data entry, filing and telephone reception
Be familiar with Macintosh computers and PCs or be able to learn quickly
Be able to work on prescribed time
Maintain good disciplinary standing with Housing and Residence Life and with the University
Be a current student of Cape Peninsula University of Technology
Responsibilities for Administrative Procedures:
The Student Assistant will:
Help the Resident Coordinator in answering the phones and greeting visitors
Assist staff and students by providing accurate information regarding Housing and Residence
Life and by using sound judgment to make appropriate referrals
Use a computer to type letters, develop forms and develop publications
Perform varied clerical duties such as filing, copying, running errands, answering the
telephone and assisting students
Be familiar with all aspects of office operations
Be familiar with the programs, services, policies and procedures of Housing and Residence
Life
Be on time for work and work hours as scheduled
Make effective use of work time
Complete all tasks assigned in an accurate, prompt and thorough manner
Responsibilities to Residents & Visitors:
The Student Assistant will:
Respond appropriately to questions, requests, and concerns of residents and visitors
Be receptive and sensitive to residents and visitors when approached for assistance
Refer problems or potential problems to a supervisor
2. Provide accurate information to students and visitors concerning University and Housing and
Residence Life facilities, programs, policies, procedures and services
Present a positive image of the University and of Housing and Residence Life through
conduct and appearance
Responsibilities to Supervisor:
The Student Assistant will:
Keep supervisor fully informed of any events or conditions that might affect students, staff, or
visitors.
Serve as a communication link between students, staff, and visitors
Take initiative in suggesting and assisting with projects that might contribute to improving
operations and procedures
Keep all matters confidential
Be supportive of supervisor, staff and Housing and Residence Life
Carry out all tasks and responsibilities delegated by supervisor
Conduct ongoing self-evaluation and keep work up to acceptable standards
Responsibilities to Other University Personnel:
The Student Assistant will:
Be familiar with the roles and responsibilities assumed by other University personnel
Be friendly to and cooperative with other University personnel
Understand the role of the Student Assistant as a part of Housing and Residence Life and
Student Affairs staffs and establish effective working relationships with all personnel
