2. What is the writing process?
Writing - anything expressed in letters, especially
a literary composition (Collin’s Dictionary)
- the activity of creating pieces of written work, such
as stories, poems, or articles (Cambridge Dictionary)
Process - a series of actions that you take in order to
achieve a result (Cambridge Dictionary)
- a method of doing or producing something (Collins
Dictionary)
3. Steps to follow in the process
Prewriting Drafting Revising
EditingPublishing
4. Prewriting
Choose a topic you
consider to be suitable
for you
Brainstorm/create mind
map of any ideas that
come to mind
Consider your
audience and purpose
of your text (Asif,2015)
5. Drafting
Jot down your ideas in a structured manner
Write in sentences and paragraphs (topic
sentence/thesis statement, etc.) (Draper, 2013)
Add supporting details to the main idea (remember your
audience)
NB : At this point grammar, punctuation
and spelling are not the focus
6. Revising
Polish your text
Remove, add, replace
some words where
necessary
Change awkward
wording/sentences
(Stiles,2008)
Share text with peers
for feedback
(Stag,2014)
7. Revising (Cont…)
In this instance
your text becomes
more “reader
centered” instead of
“writer centered”
(Stiles,2008)
Determine the
strong and week
points and
reorganize content
(Asif,2015)
(Draper,2013)
8. Editing
Now fix your spelling, punctuation, grammar & check if intended
style/format is maintained
Proofread or ask a peer to read aloud & make suggestions
(Stag, 2014)
You can use a checklist for final text (Muri,2008)
Alternative technique (COPS)Capitals
Overall Appearance
Punctuation
Spelling (Asif,2015)
9. Publishing
Does not necessarily mean going for print
Could be sharing your work with others
(classroom/online submission) (Stag,2014)
Remember, writing is a process. Know what each
step entails and keep practicing
