Q: What is propane?
A: Propane is a versatile, multi-purpose fuel that is
highly portable, clean burning and non-toxic. It is a by-
product of natural gas processing and crude oil refining.
It is extracted and used as a gas, but stored and
transported as a liquid under pressure.
Q: Is propane safe?
A: While there have been misconceptions surrounding
the safety of propane, all fuels have the potential to be
dangerous when the proper precautions are not taken.
The key to safety is proper use and handling. Some of
the characteristics of propane, along with the regulations
applied to the equipment, training, and handling, make
propane one of the safest fuels when compared to many
other fuels such as oil, gasoline, diesel and compressed
natural gas.
Q: Where does propane come from?
A: In 2010, Canada produced approximately 11 billion
litres of propane, about 80% of which comes from
natural gas wells in western Canada. The balance is
produced as a by-product from refinery production
across the country. About half of the propane produced
in Canada is consumed domestically, while the balance
is exported, primarily to the United States. Canada has a
well-developed propane infrastructure, with tremendous
capacity to produce an abundant supply with high
portability via truck, rail and pipeline across Canada, and
into the U.S.
Q: How does propane compare to
natural gas?
A: In terms of how they are used by a typical
home or business, propane and natural gas serve the
same function. Both are used as a gas, but propane
is delivered and stored as a liquid measured in litres
while natural gas is piped to homes as a gas measured
in cubic metres. Propane provides more energy per
unit of volume as measured in BTUs, which means that
more natural gas must be burned to provide the same
energy output. There is very little difference in how
the two products perform when used in properly
designed appliances.
Q: How is propane delivered?
A: Most residential and commercial users will have
a propane tank installed on their property, either
against the building or a minimum of 10’ away from
the building for larger horizontal tanks. Superior
Propane’s iconic yellow delivery trucks deliver propane
to customers across the country, 7 days a week. In
fact, we have the largest fleet of service and delivery
vehicles in the industry. We deliver in any weather,
but we do require your driveway to be clear of
obstructions such as gates and vehicles, and for snow
to be cleared. Our trucks have long hoses to reach as
far as 75’ from the truck to your tank. This allows your
tank to be installed in an area that is convenient for
piping to reach the house, and is aesthetically pleasing.

The Environment: Uses of Propane:
Q: Is propane harmful to the environment?
A: Propane, with its tiny carbon footprint and high
efficiency, can play a major role in fighting climate change.
Burning most fuels used in the world today, from coal to
wood, oil, gasoline and natural gas, produces various kinds
of carbon that contribute to global warming as Greenhouse
Gases (GHGs). Propane has lower carbon content than oil,
gasoline, diesel, kerosene and ethanol.
Q: Is propane a greenhouse gas?
A: Although natural gas (consisting primarily of methane)
generates fewer CO2 emissions per BTU than propane
when burned, methane is a direct greenhouse gas when
released into the air. One kilogram of methane released
into the atmosphere produces the same effect on climate
change as 25 kilograms of carbon dioxide! Propane, on the
other hand, is not a greenhouse gas when released. The
difference is in how quickly propane, compared to natural
gas, can be removed from the air by natural oxidation or
precipitation – propane is removed from the atmosphere
faster than it takes for it to have an impact on the climate.
In residential and commercial applications, studies
have found that propane models emit 52% lower GHG
emissions than electric water heaters when you consider
the upstream emissions (depending on fuel source for
electricity generation); 38% fewer GHGs than fuel oil
furnaces and half the carbon dioxide emissions of
charcoal barbecues.
Q: How does propane compare to other fuels?
A: While electricity, wood, natural gas, oil and
geothermal energy all have benefits, propane is uniquely
positioned as a clean burning, portable, efficient, cost
effective fuel. Propane provides virtually all of the benefits
of natural gas, but because it does not require expensive
pipelines and is easily stored and transported as a liquid, it
is suited to communities and remote areas where natural
gas networks are not available or economically viable.
Q: Can propane power the same applications
as natural gas?
A: Generally, yes. In fact, most furnaces and appliances
manufactured to be used with propane or natural gas can
be inexpensively converted to burn the other fuel. This
makes propane an excellent choice for a home that does
not have natural gas available but may at some point in
the future. Check with the equipment manufacturer or a
licensed gas fitter.
Q: What can I hook up to a bulk propane tank?
A: There are many propane heating, cooking, drying
and home comfort products that can be connected to
your Superior Propane tank. Some of the more popular
applications are furnaces, boilers, hot water heaters,
cooktops and ovens, space heaters, gas barbecues,
fireplaces, outdoor campfires, pool heaters, clothes dryers,
off-grid refrigerators and generators. Check with the
equipment manufacturer.
Q: How do I make sure I don’t run out of
propane?
A: At Superior Propane our goal is to make sure our
customers have the propane they need, when they need it.
Our Automatic Delivery option gives customers maximum
peace of mind because propane is delivered automatically
based on known or estimated propane consumption.
With this program, customers don’t have to remember
to call unless they are changing their current appliance
compliment, the pattern in which they use these
appliances, or the size of their living space.
Superior Propane also offers a Remote Tank Monitor,
which transmits your tank level to our operations centre
AND notifies you by email or text message. It will even
notify you when your tank has been filled. Combined
with Automatic Delivery, our Remote Tank Monitor offers
ultimate peace of mind, complete with our Never-Run-
Out-Guarantee.
