4. Introduction
To make a bridge between theoretical knowledge and practical skills industrial
training is very important.
Automobile technology has been advancing rapidly and many new systems have
been implemented.
During the training period, relevant and pertinent knowledge about Transmission
System and functioning of vehicles was obtained.
However, an automobile is a complex system comprising thousands of parts.
Therefore, only specific systems in vehicles which were studied during the short
industrial attachment period will be discussed in this presentation.

13. Transmission System
13
Concepts
Reduce gear torque interruption.
Increase fuel efficiency.
Provide speed and torque
conversions from a rotating power
source to another device.
Device which transfers energy between a power source and a load.
14. Parts of Transmission System
Clutch
Transmission Gearbox
Propeller shaft/ Drive shaft
Universal Joint
Slip Joint
Differential Gearbox
Axel
Wheel
14
15. Clutch
Device which is used in the transmission system to engage and disengage the
power engine to the transmission or gear box.
15
16. Parts of Clutch
There are three main parts
• Driving member
• Driven member
• Operating member
16
18. Transmission Gearbox
A set of gears with its casing,
especially in a motor vehicle.
Need to operate at a relatively
high rotational speed, which is
inappropriate for starting,
stopping, and slower travel.
18
19. Compound gear ratios
19
First set of gears
Number of teeth on
driven gear = 24
Number of teeth on
driver gear = 12
Formula =
driven / driver
24/12 = 2
Second set of gears
Number of teeth on
driven gear = 30
Number of teeth on
driver gear = 10
Formula =
driven/ driver
30/10 = 3
Multiply both ratios together
= 2 x 3
Overall ratio = 6:1

20. Kinds of Transmission Systems
a) Manual Transmission,
b) Automatic Transmission,
c) Semi-Automatic Transmission,
d) Continuously-Variable Transmission (C.V.T.).
20
23. Automatic Transmission System
Components-
Torque Converter
Planetary Gear Sets
Governor and Modulator
Hydraulic System
Seals and Gaskets
Computer
23
o Different speeds are obtained automatically.
o A completed gear set, called planetary gears.
24. Torque Converter
Components
1. Pump (Impeller)
2. Turbine
3. Stator
4. Transmission fluid
24
Transmits the twisting force or torque.
Engine and Transmission automatically coupled and uncoupled.
26. Planetary Gear Sets
• The "heart" of an automatic transmission.
• Changing gear ratios without having to engage or disengage individual gears.
Planetary has three main parts
a) Sun (centre gear)
b) Planets (small gears turning
around the sun)
c) Ring or annulus gear
26
27. Governor and Modulator
• Governor is a clever valve that tells the
transmission how fast the car is going.
27
Governor and Modulator or Throttle valve that monitor speed and throttle position in
order to determine when to shift gear.
• Modulator senses the
manifold pressure
under a greater load.
28. Hydraulic (Pump & Valve Body)
Neat pump, called a gear pump
It draws fluid from a sump
28
The brain of the automatic transmission
Contains a maze of channels and passages
29. Computer controls & Seals
That redirect the fluid to the appropriate
clutch pack or servo in order to control
shifting gear.
29
Control the flow of hydraulic fluid.
Two main external seals: front seal
and rear seal.Solenoid pack
Seal
31. Automatic Transmission Modes
U.S. Government standards must
have the modes ordered P-R-N-D-L
P (Park)
N (Neutral)
R (Reverse)
D (Drive)
3 (Third)
2 (Second)
1 or L (First or Low)
31
Other Non-Common Gear Modes
S (Sport):
B (Brake):
M, -/+:
W (winter):
D2 to D5
33. Propeller Shaft
• Transfers power from the
transmission to the rear
axle.
• Transmitting torque and
rotation.
• To connect other
components of a drive
train.
33
34. Cont..(Propeller shaft)
One-piece drive shaft
34
Two-piece drive shaft
Slip-in-tube drive shaft
New type that improves crash safety. It can
be compressed to absorb energy in the event
of a crash, so is also known as a collapsible
drive shaft.
35. Propeller Shaft Joints
Joint that connects two rotating shafts,
allowing them to move in all directions.
35
The Propeller shaft with a slip joint is
called telescopic propeller shaft.
Increase or decrease the length
of propeller shaft.
Slip Joint
Universal Joint
36. Differential Gearbox
Components
• Pinion gears.
• Side gears.
• Ring gear.
• spider gears
• Left and Right axle shaft.
36
To transmit power from the engine to the wheels while allowing them to spin at
different speeds. Avoid skidding of the rear wheel.
38. Axle
38
Mechanical part of a vehicle which is a device like 2 wheel separated by a rod or
other stabilizing device.
Dead Axle
It move only when vehicle is move due to
drive axle.
Live Axle/Drive Axle
A live axle is an axle that transmits power to
a pair of wheels.
It exist for load bearing purpose
It distribute weight of vehicle
39. Construction
The basic part of an drive axle is -
1. Hub
2. CV Joints (Outer)
3. CV Joints (Inner)
39
Locate at the end of the axle.
Used for join wheel to axle.
40. Construction
Inner CV Joint
Allow for suspension changes while
axle is rotating.
Outer CV Joint
Allow wheel to move or revolve
while axle is rotating or vehicle
is turning at an angle.
40

53. Analysis
• The analysis has been accomplished after observing some of job
cards. I picked more than 15 job cards for analysis. Among them I
found many of complains were written in the job cards.
• The most common complains against transmission are as bellow:
Transmission overheat
Fluid leak
Axle make noise.
Gear shifting problem

55. Recommendations
Safety first-most of the worker they don’t care about safety, whenever a
car is pull up by lift they stay in front of car, side and under the car. After
they staying under the car with out giving support car lift.
Need to appoint more employees. They provide services delay because
they have no sufficient worker. By appoint more worker they can give
proper service quickly as well as earn more money.
They need to make a better relationship between management and
workers.
55
56. 56
Working place should be cleaned regularly.
Every organization need to maintain 5S method to success in future
57. Conclusion
In my presentation I tried my best to give the description about
Transmission System and my practical works. During this practicum
period at the Vehicle Care Pvt. Ltd. was my basic vehicle servicing for
gaining knowledge as well as experience. Because of its having
advanced technology in automotive so it is a great achievement for me.
At last I want to say it was a very interesting and great knowledge base
journey for my student life as well as my future life.
