1. THE ROLE OF SC5 IN
THE BDE PROJECT
NCSR “Demokritos”
6 November
2017
2. Physical background
Societal Challenge 5: Climate action,
environment, resource efficiency and raw
materials
The earth’s atmosphere is the physical
background of the pilot use cases developed
for SC5 by NCSRD in the framework of the
BigDataEurope project

3. Atmosphere – related
applications
Weather prognosis
Climate change prognosis
Air pollution abatement / early warning /
countermeasures
o Anthropogenic emissions: routine (industry,
transports, domestic, etc.), accidental (nuclear,
chemical), malevolent (terrorist) – unannounced
releases
o Natural emissions (e.g., volcanic eruptions)

4. Tools for atmospheric
applications
Measuremen
ts (from earth
or space)
o Temperature
, wind
velocity,
humidity,
etc.

8. Computational modelling
Climate change and
impacts
o Dynamical
downscaling from
global to regional and
local scales

9. Computational modelling
11-oct.-16www.big-data-europe.eu
Local scale
dispersion
modelling:
o Ground deposition
and internal dose
following a
hypothetical RDD
explosion in a real
city centre QUIC Model, installed and run in NCSRD with the
financial support of EC DG Home, project IMAGES
14. Tools for atmospheric
applications
Combination of model and measurements →
“data assimilation”
o Weather forecasting: initialization and 4DDA
o Dispersion “inverse” modelling for unknown
source estimation and sensitivity assessment
The 2nd BDE SC5 pilot use case presents a
tool for estimation of unknown source location

15. Scales of atmospheric motions
11-oct.-16www.big-data-europe.eu
• Atmospheric
motions consist of
interconnected
eddies with vast
range of size- and
time-scales
16. Connection to BDE
The atmosphere is a complex system
To describe it we use complex partial differential
equations
The equations are solved numerically on computational
meshes consisting of up to millions or tens-of-millions
points
Large volumes of monitoring data are also assimilated
Computer capacity increases
Big Data tools become necessary 11-oct.-16www.big-data-europe.eu
17. Conclusion – Aim of pilot use
cases
Atmospheric-related applications produce or
use large volumes of (possibly heterogeneous)
data
To demonstrate ways that tools provided by
BDE can contribute to more efficient
management / processing / exploitation of
these data
