Current Social Media Usage: Elementary students extensively use social media for
learning and other activities(Anderson & Jiang, 2018; Kanagarathinam, 2014).
Time Devoted to Social Media: Research indicates that a significant percentage of
students spend substantial time on social media(Savoia et al., 2021b).
Its effects on Academic Performance: The effects of social media on academic
performance varies (Egedegbe, 2014).
Evolution of Communication: Social networking sites have transformed traditional face-
to-face interactions(Asur and Huberman, 2010).

6. Technology's Role in Education: The influence of technology, particularly social media, can
significantly affect students' educational journeys either positively or negatively (Kozma, 2005).
Challenges Faced by Elementary Students:
Lack of understanding of social media norms,
inability to distinguish reality from fantasy,
increased cyberbullying risk,
exposure to inappropriate content (Anderson & Jiang, 2018; Chen & Gao, 2019; Boyd &
Ellison, 2007b).

14. Dual effects: Social media impacts academic performance with
both positive and negative outcomes.
Determining Factors: Outcomes depend on various factors
like usage type, purpose, frequency, duration, study habits,
parental guidance, etc.
Gaps in Literature: Existing research lacks longitudinal and
experimental studies, consistency in measurement, and faces
ethical challenges.
Dynamic Landscape: Rapid changes in the social media
landscape pose challenges and affect academic performance.
Relating to Research Question: These findings provide a
comprehensive overview, suggesting future research directions.
