 It is one of the most acceptable theories of
psychology.
 It is a method to improve the communication.
 It is developed bye Dr Eric Berne during
1950s.
 It has wide application in clinical therapeutic
and personal development.
 The unit of social intercourse is called a
transaction.
 If two or more people encounter each other
sooner or later one of them will speak this is
called transactional stimulus
 The other one is called the transactional
response
 Ego state : “The consistent pattern of feeling
and experience directly related to a
corresponding consistent pattern of
behavior.”
 Berne defined the three ego states as
1. Parent
2. Child
3. Adult
 In parent ego stage people will treat others
like children.
 This is a role where people becomes
authoritative , caring , controlling and some
times bossy.
 Means people are often in parent like roles.
 A state in which people behave, feel, and
think similarly to how they did in childhood.
 Child ego stage behave liberally of fun, -love
and care free behaviour.
 Everything the child saw the parents do and
everything he heard from them is recorded
straight without editing.
 Oriented towards current reality and objectivity
gathering of information.
 Data processing centre this is a role of care, concern,
respect, responsibility and maturity.
 We can describe the adult as a data processing
computer, which grinds out the decision after
computing the information from three sources such
as parent, child and the data which he gathered.
1.Complementary transaction
 Here we are expecting a response or there is
Interaction, response , actions regarded as
appropriate and expected from another
person.
 Here the communication is
continuous.
 It means there is a response
for the transaction stimuli.
2. Crossed transaction
 Here we are not expecting the response for
the stimuli. And the action or response are
not regarded as appropriate.
 In this the communication is breakdown.
3.Ulterior transaction
When a transaction has a hidden meaning that
is termed as ulterior transaction.
 The ulterior / hidden message is more
important for the sender.
 These transactions are the most difficult to
identify and deal with.
 Life positions are the basic belief about self
and others
 It is used to justify decision and behavior.
 We choose a basic position towards ourselves
and other people
 Our life position is like a set of glasses through
which we see the world
OK corral by Franklin Ernst
I am ok You are ok
(Healthy position)
I am not ok you are ok
(Depressive position)
I am ok you are not ok
(Paranoid position)
I am not okYou are not ok
(helpless position or futile
position)
 I am ok, you are ok:
“Means I am ok with myself and with you too”
 I am ok, you are not ok:
“I am ok but I cant relay on or trust you.”
Because I feel something wrong with other people
 I am not ok , you are ok
“There is something fundamentally wrong with me but
everybody else is ok”
 I am not ok, you are not ok
“There is something wrong with me and other people
are wrong in some way too”
 In transactional analysis, a person’s life is
compared to a play and script is the text of
that play.
 A person’s life script is plan of life which is
made unconsciously in childhood which is
further reinforced by others, environmental
events & finally finish in a selected behavioral
pattern
 Parental teaching & decision that we make
early in life develops our life script.
 Stroke means to recognize someone or any person by
looks, smile, touch and speaking.
 Any person that does something to recognize the
presence of others is called stroking.
 Strokes are of two types.
1. Positive stroke
2. Negative stroke
 We start getting strokes from our childhood.
1.conditional 1. conditional
2.Unconditional 2. unconditional
stroke
Positive stroke Negative stroke Neutral or
indifference stroke
 Positive stroke may be in the form of praise complements
or smiles.
 They contributes to a person’s sense of OK.
 Negative stroke may be such as critical commands,
avoidance, punishments, or hateful remarks.
 Positive conditional and unconditional stroke and like wise
negative conditional and un conditional stroke are there
 Positive conditional.
There is a condition imposed.
Person is thus appreciated for doing that. So he is
receiving the conditional positive stroke.
 Positive unconditional
There is no condition. The person is appreciated for
being not for doing.
Parents love their children unconditionally
 Negative conditional stroke
The person is scolded or criticized for not fulfilling
the conditions.
 Negative unconditional stroke
If a person get scolded for no reason then he is
receiving the negative unconditional stroke
3. Neutral or indifference stroke
You are ignoring a person totally and act as if he
does not exist.
It is an extremely cruel form of mental punishment.
 Berne defines that a game is an ongoing
series of complementary ulterior transaction
progressing to a well defined predictable
outcome.
 Interpersonal effectiveness
 Promoting positive thinking
 Motivating
 Understanding behavior dynamics
 Leadership
 Organizational development
 Sales area
 Diagnostic and therapeutic use
 Tool for self awareness
