2. What is advertising?
Advertising is a marketing communication
that employs an openly sponsored, non-
personal message to promote or sell a
product, service or idea.
8. History of advertising
The Egyptians used papyrus to
advertise goods and services.
In ancient Rome and other parts of the
ancient world mosaics, pictures on
signs or walls were used by businesses
to advertise their wares.
The Athenians, however, took
advertising to a whole new level by
using town criers to stroll the streets
advertising products and services (very
similar to our television and radio
commercials) and can probably be
credited with being the inventors of
advertising as we know it today.
9. The earliest surviving printed ad in English was
published in 1477 by William Caxton, English
merchant, diplomat, writer and printer. This ad
announces Caxton's edition of the "Sarum Ordinal"
or "Pye", a list of rules for clergy at Salisbury on
how to deal with the changing date of Easter.
11. The American government
started promoting advertising
in the 1920s. In 1925 the
Secretary of Commerce,
Herbert Hoover, addressed
the Associated Advertising
Clubs of the World with a
speech called “Advertising is
a vital force in our National
Life”.

more creativity

France (briefly) bans Coca-Cola
Alarmed by the
presence of what they
perceived as Coke's
invasive American
influence, and
pressured by socialist
elements in the ruling
class, the French
government gives their
Department of Public
Health the authority to
ban the sale of Coca-
Cola in France. The

Cola truck at the Tour
de France in 1951.
Public reaction to the
ban was such that it
was quickly repealed.

Coca Cola appeals to South American
nations with soccer
In 2012, Coke began a
campaign to reach more
South American consumers
by getting endorsements
from famous soccer
players. These ads appeal
to the pride many South
American nations feel in
their soccer teams. Coke
has gained a lot of
popularity in recent years in
South America, and in
exactly the ways the
company wants.

Coca-Cola's Olympic can is
marketed as almost
aggressively non-
nationally-affiliated. The
wide variety of different
colors arranged in such a
way as to not resemble the
mblem of any country, as
well as the inclusive lines,
give the product an
international feel that is
very suited to the Games,
where a feeling of global
unity is attractive to
consumers.
