extract and condense information based on library sources; verbal and non-verbal cues
in oral communication; and types of phrases, clauses, and sentences.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD:
The learner transfers learning by: resolving conflicts presented in literary
selections; using tools and mechanisms in locating library resources; extracting
information and noting details from texts to write précis, summary, or paraphrase;
distinguishing between and using literal and figurative language and verbal and non-
verbal cues; use phrases, clauses, and sentences meaningfully and appropriately.

b) interpret the message of the poem by analyzing each stanza;
c) give the importance of courtship in our generation; and
d) construct their own love poem.

quote, which gives advice or

girl is your crush and you want to
court her. How will you, a Filipino
gentleman, would pursuit an
attractive woman like her?

picture of the man in front. Can

about courtship because we will
tackle a poem entitled
“Ambahan” which is one of the
lyric poems used by the
Mangyans to court a woman they
like.
Boys, listen up because will learn
how to win the girls heart through
a more traditional way rather
than those gift-giving that we
have today,
I am not saying that it is not good
to give gifts like chocolates or
whatever but then, I think that
you will more likely to have a
chance if you resort to the
traditional courting like haranas
and writing poems for the one we
love. Because in that way, you
will not just express how
interested you are in them but it
will also touch their hearts that
you are indeed genuine in
pursuing them.
But before I further introduce to
you the “Ambahan”, do you know
what poetry is? What is poetry?
Very good, everyone! All of your
answer is correct!

Artemis: Poetry is a
composition written in verse.
Erin: Poetry is an arrangement
of words containing meaning.
Adonis: Poetry is anything that
the poet created.
C. Discussion Proper Poetry is an arrangement of
words written or spoken;
traditionally a rhythmical
composition, sometimes rhymes,
expressing experiences, ideas,
or emotions in a style more
concentrated, imaginative, and
powerful than that of ordinary
speech or prose: some poems
are in meter, some in free verse.
Now, what are the kinds of
poetry?
All of you are right! We have
narrative, epic, drama, elegy and
of course, the lyric poetry.
The lesson we will be discussed
today is under the lyric poetry.
Lyric Poetry refers to the
expressing of deep personal
feelings in a way that is like a
song.
Now, presenting to you one of
the lyric poems of the Philippines
which is called “Ambahan” in
Hanunoo, Mangyan language.
Ambahan is a literary product
and poetic expressions of the
Southern (Hanunoo) Mangyans
of Mindoro, Philippines.
It is a rhythmic poetic expression
with a meter of seven syllable
lines and having rhythmic end-
syllables.
It is most often presented as a
chant without a determined
musical pitch or accompaniment
by musical instruments.
Its purpose is to express in an
allegorical way, liberally using
poetic language, certain
situations or certain
characteristics referred to by the
one reciting the poem.
Ambahan is a Mangyan poem
that is intended to be sung by
man when he is courting the
woman he likes. They sing until
the woman they like will let them
come into her house.
In the old days, a suitor would
cross mountain ranges to visit
the woman he adores and read
Mnemosyne: Epic
Loki: Drama
Hades: Elegy
Thor: Lyric
or sang verses of the Ambahan.
So, girls, do you want to be
courted in this way?
Okay boys, have a mental note
about this one.
Without so much ado, let us now
go over the poem. Hades, may
you read or sing the poem. I am
hoping to see your emotions as
you deliver the poem.
Meanwhile, to the rest of the
class, you should listen carefully
and must read the poem also
with your eyes. Okay?

Hanunuo-Mangyan Poem
Look! The moon so full and
bright,
shining in front of the house,
How can you explain to me,
that the rays are soft and cool?
If a man like us he were,
I would hold him by the hand!
Seize the hair to keep him back!
Grasp the clothes to make him
stay!
But how could I manage that!
It is the moon in the sky!
The full moon shining so bright,
going down behind the hills,
disappearing from the plain,
out of sight behind the rocks.

Some of you have said yes and
some said no. But the said poem
is a meter of seven syllables and
is a rhythmic end-syllable. If you
are having doubts, then, we can
count it.
Look at the first verse in the first
stanza, let us try counting it.
Look! The moon so full and
bright,
How many syllables are in for the
first verse?
How about in the last verse?
out of sight behind the rocks
Yes, it is! Just like the Filipino
tanaga, each line or verse of the
Ambahan poem contains seven
syllables.
Now, who can give me the
number of stanzas in the said
poem? Yes, Zeus?
How do you say so? And what is
stanza, by the way?
That is right. The Ambahan
poem is composed of three
stanzas. Stanzas are the group
of verse or the paragraph-like.
Now, before we discuss the
message of the poem. Do you
have any questions? Or are
there words that you did not
understand in the poem?

All: Seven, Madam.
All: Still, it is seven syllables.
Zeus: It is a three-stanza
poem, Madam.
Zeus: Stanza is the group of
lines or verse forming the
basic recurring metrical unit in
a poem. And basically, the
group of lines which seems
like a paragraph is the stanzas
here in the poem.
How about the others?
Okay, there are lots of words that
you did not understand so let us
decipher them first.
Unlocking Difficulties.
Beyond – it is a word that means
further than certain places.
Bright – radiating or reflecting
light.
Grasp – A firm grip.
Hills – A mass of earth smaller
than a mountain.
Manage – to have control over
something.
Plains – Grassland or field.
Rays – any of the lines of light
that appears to radiate from a
bright object.
Rocks – a large stone
Seize – to take hold or possess.
Sight – something that is seen.
Now that we unlock the words,
let us move on to the discussion
of the meaning and message of
the poem.
Class, do you still look up to the
sky at night to see the moon?
I have said earlier that rays is any
of the lines of light that appear to
radiate from a bright object. Now,
can you give me the difference
between the rays of the sun and
moon?
Ra: I did not understand the
word “beyond”, Madam.
Seth: Grasp
Nympha: Manage
All: Yes, Madam.
Hestia: The sun rays is
brighter than the moon.
Excellent. So, did you notice
something in this stanza? What
is being described?
Psyche, in the second stanza,
who is being compared to the
moon?
Yes, that is correct! Do you know
what figure of speech was use in
this stanza?
Metaphor is indeed a part of
speech but we are looking into
the one that gives human traits to
non-living things.
Okay, it is good that you know
Simile. As you can see, the first
verse of this stanza used “like”
for the comparison however as I
have said, we are looking into
that one that gives a person’s
traits to non-living things such as
the moon or the table.
Exactly! So how was the
personification used?
Correct. However, how was
personification used?
What were the human traits that
the second stanza is pointing
out?
That is right! Moreover, let us go
over the last stanza. What do you
think is the last stanza talking
about?
Right. What else? Does it also
talk about the location of the
moon?
Can you read the part where it
says the location of the moon,
Hercules: The sun rays is hot
while the moon is not.
Mars: The moon is being
described in the first stanza,
Ma’am.
Psyche: The moon was being
compared to Cupid or to a
man.
Psyche: Metaphor, Madam.
Adonis: Simile, Madam.
Achilles: Personification.
Artemis: The moon is
described as a man.
Apollo: Basically, the moon
was given human traits.
Athena: It was given a hair.
Third: It was given a hand.
Osiris: The moon was also
described with clothes.
All: The moon.

Very well. How about the moon’s
direction? Is it going anywhere
else, Ra?
Correct! What is else does it says
there?
Very nice! So now, why do you
think the speaker of the poem
want the moon to stay?
Yes, that can be one of the
cases. But remember, this poem
is used to court woman. What
time of the day do you think the
Mangyans court the woman they
like or love?
So, does this courtship have
anything to do with the moon?
If the moon is only seen at night,
it meant that they court woman
during?
So again, going back to the
question, why do you think the
man wants the moon to stay?
Very good, that is right! The
speaker wanted the moon to stay
so that he will have more time to
court the woman he likes.
Because the more time the man
had, will give him a bigger
chance that the woman will fall
for him.
Moreover, although sometimes,
there is no assurance whether
the woman will like him back, he
will still take the risk. He will
continue to pursue and proves to
the woman that he can wait even
though he knew that he might be
rejected at the end. Because

Artemis: It is the moon in the
sky!
Ra: It is going down beyond
hills.
Aphrodite: It is out of sight
behind the rocks.
Mnemosyne: Because the
moon is cool and the speaker
wanted more to appreciate it.
Athena: At night time.
Poseidon: Yes, Madam.
Because the moon is only
seen at night.
Hades: Night!
Mars: Perhaps, it is because
the man wants more time to
court the woman.
Mangyans believe that, a real
man is not afraid to show his
feelings and is not afraid of
rejections. They believe that a
man is someone who is willing to
take a risk in the name of love.
Is it touching, girls?
Yes, that should be the spirit! So,
boys, don’t be afraid of rejection,
instead be a man. Man-up!
That is good!
Additionally, the Ambahan poem
is a courtship poem, it is also
used to express how genuine or
sincere a husband’s love for his
wife. Moreover, it also tackles
about nature, life, and death,
love and relationships. While
reading the Ambahan poem, we
can get there a feeling of humility
and beauty.

after that, you will be going to
present it in front.

JHS English Lesson on Philippine Ambahan Poetry

BATALLONES Learning Area ENGLISH Teaching Dates And Time MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY Grade Level JHS-7 8:30 AM Quarter SECOND PROGRAM STANDARD: The learner demonstrates communicative competence through his/her understanding of literature and other text types for a deeper appreciation of Philippine Culture and those of countries. GRADE STANDARD: The learner demonstrates communicative competence through his/her understanding of Philippine Literature and other text types for a deeper appreciation of Philippine Culture. CONTENT STANDARD: The learner demonstrates understanding of: Philippine literature during Period of Apprenticeship as a means of examining conflicts; various purposeful listening and viewing strategies; difference between literal and figurative language; ways to extract and condense information based on library sources; verbal and non-verbal cues in oral communication; and types of phrases, clauses, and sentences. PERFORMANCE STANDARD: The learner transfers learning by: resolving conflicts presented in literary selections; using tools and mechanisms in locating library resources; extracting information and noting details from texts to write prĂ©cis, summary, or paraphrase; distinguishing between and using literal and figurative language and verbal and non- verbal cues; use phrases, clauses, and sentences meaningfully and appropriately. I. OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students shall be able to: a) determine poetry and its kinds; b) interpret the message of the poem by analyzing each stanza; c) give the importance of courtship in our generation; and d) construct their own love poem. . LEARNING PROCEDURES TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY A. Preparation 1) Prayer Let us all stand and remember Jesus Christ. May I call (name of a student) to lead the opening prayer? Apollo: Madam, classmates, let us be one in hearts, in our midst as we pray. Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hollowed be Thy name, thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in

Nice meeting you and I am hoping for your active participation as we proceed to our discussion. Please remain standing for I will be grouping you all. Girls, occupy the right side of this room, while boys will be occupying the other side. Okay now, let’s get moving! You may all take your seats! By the way, pass your assignment that was given last meeting for it will serve as your attendance for today. To those who will not pass their assignments, a loss point for you. For our discussion to flow smoothly and nicely, here are the classroom rules that everyone must follow. Read it out loud, (name of a student). CLASSROOM RULES K – Keep the classroom neat and tidy. R – Raise your hand when you want to recite or speak. E – Encourage each other and establish rapport in class. Discussion Proper Poetry is an arrangement of words written or spoken; traditionally a rhythmical composition, sometimes rhymes, expressing experiences, ideas, or emotions in a style more concentrated, imaginative, and powerful than that of ordinary speech or prose: some poems are in meter, some in free verse.
  • 6. Now, what are the kinds of poetry? All of you are right! We have narrative, epic, drama, elegy and of course, the lyric poetry. The lesson we will be discussed today is under the lyric poetry. Lyric Poetry refers to the expressing of deep personal feelings in a way that is like a song. Now, presenting to you one of the lyric poems of the Philippines which is called “Ambahan” in Hanunoo, Mangyan language. Ambahan is a literary product and poetic expressions of the Southern (Hanunoo) Mangyans of Mindoro, Philippines. It is a rhythmic poetic expression with a meter of seven syllable lines and having rhythmic end- syllables. It is most often presented as a chant without a determined musical pitch or accompaniment by musical instruments. Its purpose is to express in an allegorical way, liberally using poetic language, certain situations or certain characteristics referred to by the one reciting the poem. Ambahan is a Mangyan poem that is intended to be sung by man when he is courting the woman he likes. They sing until the woman they like will let them come into her house. Just like the Filipino tanaga, each line or verse of the Ambahan poem contains seven syllables. Now, who can give me the number of stanzas in the said poem? Yes, Zeus? How do you say so? And what is stanza, by the way? That is right. The Ambahan poem is composed of three stanzas. Stanzas are the group of verse or the paragraph-like. Now, before we discuss the message of the poem. Manage – to have control over something. Plains – Grassland or field. Rays – any of the lines of light that appears to radiate from a bright object. Rocks – a large stone Seize – to take hold or possess. Sight – something that is seen. Now that we unlock the words, let us move on to the discussion of the meaning and message of the poem. Class, do you still look up to the sky at night to see the moon? I have said earlier that rays is any of the lines of light that appear to radiate from a bright object. Now, can you give me the difference between the rays of the sun and moon? Ra: I did not understand the word “beyond”, Madam. Seth: Grasp Nympha: Manage All: Yes, Madam. Do you know what figure of speech was use in this stanza? Metaphor is indeed a part of speech but we are looking into the one that gives human traits to non-living things. Okay, it is good that you know Simile. As you can see, the first verse of this stanza used “like” for the comparison however as I have said, we are looking into that one that gives a person’s traits to non-living things such as the moon or the table. Exactly! So how was the personification used? Correct. However, how was personification used? What were the human traits that the second stanza is pointing out? That is right! Moreover, let us go over the last stanza. What do you think is the last stanza talking about? Right. What else? Does it also talk about the location of the moon? Can you read the part where it says the location of the moon, Hercules: The sun rays is hot while the moon is not. Mars: The moon is being described in the first stanza, Ma’am. Psyche: The moon was being compared to Cupid or to a man. Psyche: Metaphor, Madam. Adonis: Simile, Madam. Achilles: Personification. Artemis: The moon is described as a man. Apollo: Basically, the moon was given human traits. Athena: It was given a hair. Third: It was given a hand. Osiris: The moon was also described with clothes. All: The moon.

So now, why do you think the speaker of the poem want the moon to stay? Yes, that can be one of the cases. But remember, this poem is used to court woman. What time of the day do you think the Mangyans court the woman they like or love? So, does this courtship have anything to do with the moon? If the moon is only seen at night, it meant that they court woman during? So again, going back to the question, why do you think the man wants the moon to stay? Very good, that is right! The speaker wanted the moon to stay so that he will have more time to court the woman he likes. Because the more time the man had, will give him a bigger chance that the woman will fall for him. Moreover, although sometimes, there is no assurance whether the woman will like him back, he will still take the risk. He will continue to pursue and proves to the woman that he can wait even though he knew that he might be rejected at the end. Because All: Yes, Madam. Artemis: It is the moon in the sky! Ra: It is going down beyond hills. Aphrodite: It is out of sight behind the rocks. Mnemosyne: Because the moon is cool and the speaker wanted more to appreciate it. Athena: At night time. Poseidon: Yes, Madam. Because the moon is only seen at night. Hades: Night! Mars: Perhaps, it is because the man wants more time to court the woman.
  • 12. Mangyans believe that, a real man is not afraid to show his feelings and is not afraid of rejections. They believe that a man is someone who is willing to take a risk in the name of love. Is it touching, girls? Yes, that should be the spirit! So, boys, don’t be afraid of rejection, instead be a man. Man-up! That is good! Additionally, the Ambahan poem is a courtship poem, it is also used to express how genuine or sincere a husband’s love for his wife. Moreover, it also tackles about nature, life, and death, love and relationships. While reading the Ambahan poem, we can get there a feeling of humility and beauty. Now, do you understand it class?
