 Sweet flag (Acorus calamus)
 Family- Acoraceae
 Commonly known drug in
traditional system of medicine.
 Chromosome no.-Diploid(2n=24)
 Origin-North America

4. Botanical description:-
 It is a tall perennial wetland monocot plant.
 Its leaf scars are brown white and spongy.
 The leaves are few and distichously
alternate.
 Leaf size-1-1.7cm.
 Flowers-3 to 8 cm long. Cylindrical,
greenish brown.

5.  Leaf have a single prominent mid-vein and on both sides
slidely raised secondary vein.
 Flowers from early to late summer.
 Grow in marshy places up to an altitude of 2000m.
like Himalaya, Manipur, Naga hills and some parts of
south India.

6.  There are two species in genus Acorus :-
 Acorus calamus
 Acorus gramineus
 Acorus gramineus ( Commonly known as Japanese sweet flag ).
 Native- eastern asia.
 Dwarf, aquatic/wetland perennial and semi-evergreen leaf
foliage.

7. Cultivation area:-
 The plant is available under wild and
cultivated condition.
In INDIA:
 About 77 per cent is cultivated within an area
of 80 ha.
 23 percent is gathered from the wild.
 Karnataka= 70 per cent of total cultivated
area.
Suitable condition:
Moist climate, clay loam to alluvial soil

 1. Acorus calamus variegatus:-
• The leaves of this variety have cream and yellow color leaves.
2. Acorus gramineus:-
• It is evergreen plant.
• Found in pacific north-west.
 3. Acorus gragramineus ogon :-
• the variegated leaves of this variety have golden and green color.
• 10-12 inch tall.
