2. Marketing your book:
An essential part of the process
Many of our clients ask us how to go about
marketing their self-published books.
We’re Barry Fox and Nadine Taylor, ghostwriters
of bestselling business books, memoirs and
more.
And although we’re not professional marketers,
we can certainly give you some excellent
marketing tips!
3. Congrats, you’re an author!
And now the real work starts…
Writing and self-publishing your book is just
the beginning. Now you must become a
marketing maven. If you don’t, your book
simply won’t sell.
Listing your book for sale on Amazon is just
the beginning of the marketing process.
Here are 5 additional steps that you must
take!
4. #1 – Develop your “author platform”
Your author platform is a combo of everything you can
do to reach potential readers and sell books.
This includes your website and blog, social media,
Amazon author page, email lists, any radio or TV
appearances you make, and so on.
The bigger your platform, the more people you’ll
reach, which can lead to more sales.
Don’t wait to develop your author platform! Get
started now, even if your book isn’t finished. For more,
see “How To Build Your Author Platform.”
5. #2 – Actively pursue reviews and quotes
Reviews are incredibly important!
More is always better, especially on your Amazon
description page. Nothing spells “amateur” faster than a
book with just a few reviews.
Quotes are also very helpful. They can come from
experts on your book’s subject matter, well-known
authors, or other recognizable individuals.
Don’t hesitate to contact anyone who might be of help,
whether you know them or not.
6. #3 – Sign up for KDP Select
Once you’re signed up with KDP Select, you can run
a Kindle Countdown deal every three months for up to
seven days.
During this time, you can reduce the price of your
e-book to as little as $.99 as a way of generating both
excitement and readers.
More people are likely to buy your book at a
discounted price. This will drive up your sales
numbers and, thus, your position on the sales list,
making your book more visible.
7. #4 – Use book promotion sites
During your Kindle Countdown periods, run paid ads
featuring your book on special book promotion sites.
If you skip this step, people may not know about your
discounted book!
Book promotion sites include, among others:
Booksends, BookBub, Book Gorilla, and Fussy Librarian.
You’ll need to experiment to find which ones work best
for your book. It can be well worth your time, effort and
money!
8. #5 – Create an amazing
Amazon book description page
You’ll have your best chance to sell your book when a
prospective reader lands on your Amazon book
description page.
So make sure you have an irresistible hook; perhaps a
quote from a famous person who’s read your book, a
stunning fact, or a provocative question.
Then give the briefest, most tantalizing summary of your
fabulous book. Likening your book to others in the same
genre can be helpful.
9. Marketing your book on the internet can
be difficult—but it’s doable!
5 Key Steps:
• develop your author platform
• actively pursue reviews and quotes
• sign up for KDP Select
• use book promotion sites
• create an amazing Amazon book description page
Complete these five steps and you’ll be well on your
way to getting your book into the hands of those all-
important target readers!
