Kate Barnes HR Business Partner South Glos Council
2. About Proud to Care
Aims to;
Promote care as a career
Attract, develop and retain staff within the
personal care sector
3. Devon’s experience
• “Recruitment has gone through the roof! I’ve received 30
applicants, which is unheard of and I know that 9 of them came
directly from the Proud to Care campaign and the recruitment
portal” - Acting Registered Manager, Tiverton
• “What a great initiative!” – Director, National Private Provider
• I’m delighted with the Proud to Care campaign. For me, it’s great
that Proud to Care attracts applicants with the right values and
people who have a real heart for the work. In fact, I recruited a
fantastic member of staff within one hour of placing an advert for
a night care assistant at our care home in East Devon! We will
definitely continue to use the recruitment portal for future
vacancies and I would thoroughly recommend this to other care
and health providers.” - Care Home Manager, East Devon

Why;
Demographic pressures and local employment market, changes to health and care systems mean there is a growing need for quality care provision. We know that we need to attract new people into caring roles, and to do this we need to demonstrate how care can be fulfilling and rewarding and link interested people to local opportunities.
Scope – direct care provision; domiciliary care, residential care, nursing care, volunteers, personal assistants
Share real life stories of caring
Link people with current vacancies
Provide information about training and careers
& longer term working with partners and other agencies to create a wider variety of career pathways in Health and Care.
Devon - started their Proud to Care campaign in 2016 and have had very positive responses from Care Providers seeing an increase in high quality applicants to vacancies to positive responses from public to their campaign.
Devon have invited the local authorities of the South West to join a Proud to Care South West campaign. All the SW authorities have signed up, which means that we have more we can invest in the campaign to make it as impactful and successful as possible.
The Campaign is planned to run from July of this year to March 2018. The extract details have yet to be scoped but it is likely to be a phased campaign using a variety of media to get the message out as widely as possible. The main vehicle to raise awareness will be to use real life stories from a wide range to people involved in care, talking about their experiences and what they have got from their work. We will also be looking to create our own South Glos stories, your support and involvement in putting these together would be really appreciated.
The exact format and approach the campaign will take has yet to be decided; it is likely to involve; social media, radio, posters, till receipts, roadshows in shopping centres, libraries, job centres. Job fairs and anything else we can think of. We will be making sure all our partners in Health and the Community are aware to help get the messages out as far and as clearly as possible. How do you currently advertise your vacancies?
People responding to the campaign will be directed to the Proud to Care South West web page – which will allow people to select the region of the South West they are interested in. This will take them to the Proud to Care South Gloucestershire micro –site. This site is in development, so I can’t show you exactly what it will look like. This is Devons page.
Ours will be similar; the tabs along the top allow you to explore; all about care, careers and courses training available via SGC and elsewhere, share some SG real stories, list current vacancies. The site will be maintained and will be able to promote specific areas of interest and we will be closely monitoring how the site is used to make improvements as we go along.
The aspiration is that all our care providers, will forward their vacancies to the south glos team to be uploaded onto the job page. The South Glos recruitment team will maintain this page to ensure it is professional and up to date. Each vacancy will show summary information and a link through to your home page where individuals can complete an application.
This has been a quick overview of the Campaign and how it will work. My colleagues Greg, Rachel & Hayley will be in touch and are happy for you to contact them direct to find out more.
We would very much welcome your involvement; either in providing us with great real life stories for the site, offering your time to support the campaign and most importantly in using the microsite to advertise your vacancies.
We will keep the SGC Providers forum up to date and would be happy to come back to this forum if that would be helpful to update you all on progress.
We are very excited about the potential of the campaign to raise the profile of caring careers and bring new people into the sector
Thank you for your time
Any questions?
