The Means-Ends chain of objectives:-
Like the overall planning process, objectives setting are a top to bottom proposition. Top
managers set boarders objectives with longer time horizons then do successfully low levels of
managers. In effect, this downward flow of objectives create of means chain working from
bottom to top e.g. supervisory level objectives provides the mean from achieving middle
level objectives (ends) that in return, provide the means for achieving top level objectives
(ends).
The organizational hierarchy has, of course, been telescoped and narrowed at the middle and
lowers for illustrative for propose. Usually two or three layers of management would separate
the present and the product line managers.
Another, layers one or two would separate –product line manager from area sale managers.
But the telescoping help show that low level objectives provide the means from
accomplishing high level ends or objectives provide the means for accomplishing high level
ends or objectives.
