1. What made you decide to become vegan?
Hard question, it started when I realized that cows producemilk all
the time for the fun of it. Like all femalemammals, to producemilk, a
cow mustgive birth. And like human females, a cow’s pregnancy lasts
ninemonths. Milkinga cow constantly will obviously maketheir
uddersextremely soreand this will only get worseand worse.
I personally don’twantto benefit off a productthat is causing great
stress pain for others to produceit. I then started looking into the
environmentalimpactof the dairy industry and that made mereally
start questioningmy eating habits.
What are your favorite meals/snacks?
My favoritemeal is any form of pasta. I love pasta anyway butthe fact
that it is healthy makes it even more appealing. The idea that you can
make it with differentsaucesand toppingsis great as well and it
tastes amazing.
Have you felt any advantages/disadvantages from becoming
vegan? (Health, missing out on anything etc.)
In all fairnessit is very stressful, because peopleare constantly
telling you that you’renot getting enoughprotein, and every time
you’reill it’s apparently becauseyou’revegan.
Are there any foods that you have found that are vegan that
you wouldn’t expect to be?
Vegan and scotch pancakes. Amazingly wecan includetoppingssuch
as golden syrup, lemon juiceand vegan chocolate spread.
What did you find hardest to give up?
I would haveto say cheese. Milk and chocolate substitutes are
amazingbut as of yet nobody has madea cheese substitute that
doesn’ttaste like plastic.
What coping mechanisms did you have?
When I first became vegan, I tried to eat cheese when people were
not looking, but eventually I realized that it was becoming a craving,
and that I would need to stop if I wanted to make this lifestyle
change.
Do you feel healthier since becoming vegan?
2. I think so, but I was already eating fairly healthy beforeI madethis
change so I can’t be sure.
Is it more expensive than not being vegan?
This dependson whatyou buy. Certain vegan foodsare very
expensiveto assemble, but on the other hand others are cheaper.
Do you have support from other people who are vegans?
My best piece of advice to give would be to join vegan groupsonline,
as there are so many peopleoutthere willing to answer your
question. Another thing is to not be too harsh on yourself so that f
you cave in and eat some chocolate, it is not the end of the world. The
best thing to do is find vegan treats that make you happy, and have a
stash of them for those momentswhen you wanta slab of cheese and
chocolate. Something else that I would recommend isto bake a lot, as
there are so many amazingvegan recipes out there which are a lot
moreinventivethan certain junk food.
I read a great bit of advisethe other day which was ‘alwaysbe the
vegan you would haveliked to have met beforeyou became vegan’. It
is so easy to try and make peoplearound you understand why you
have decided to go vegan, and it’s hard to talk about being vegan to
someonewho isn’t because they are either notinterested or just
don’tget it.
It’s all about staying calm and tryingto take part in constructive
conversations.
My last tip would be to enjoy it, again get involved in groupsonline
and meet other vegans, enjoy living in the knowledgethat you are
staying trueto what you believe in.
