An example from ‘Jaws’ is the sound of the
teenagers on the beach in the opening scene.
An example from ‘Psycho’ is the sound of the
shower in the shower scene.
3. The sound put on a film during post-production
E.g.

Sound effects like a crescendo
Background music
An example from ‘Jaws’ is the music when the
shark is swimming towards the victim.
An example from ‘Psycho’ is the screeching noise
when Marion is getting stabbed in the shower
scene.
4. Build up of sound or music to imply something
is about to happen
An example of diegetic crescendo from ‘The
Godfather’ is the restaurant scene leading up to
Michael shooting the two people.
5. Where the music or sound dies down, as if a
threat has gone away
An example from ‘CSI-Strip Strangler’ is in the
opening scene when the woman was asleep in
her apartment and she wakes up from the noise
of the creaking but the camera shows there is
nothing there in the room with her and the
music dies down.
6. A short, sharp, loud noise, often used to
emphasise shock or fear.
An example is in ‘Paranormal Activity’ when
the door is slammed shut.
