INTRODUCTION TO LINGUISTICS
3. Diglossia
Diaglosia is the situation where there are two varieties
of the same language throughout the speech
community, which has the "high" version of a language
isn't used for ordinary conversation and has no native
speakers. One form is the literary or prestige dialect,
and the other is a common dialect spoken by most of
the population.
4. Diglossia
There are 2 characteristics of diaglosia:
• Two distinct varieties of the same language are
used in the community, with one regarded as high
(or H) variety and the other a low (or L) variety.
• Each variety is used for quite distinct functions; H
and L complement each other.
Greek, Arabic and Tamil are the examples of diaglosia.
6. Bilingualism
• Bilingualism is a phenomenon where a person can
speak fluently in more than one language, i.e. two
languages (their mother tongue and an additional
language).
• People who can be like this are called bilinguals.
• Someone could become bilingual because they're
raised in dual-language or because they're learn
new language.
7. Bilingualism
For example, a person could speak and
communicate in Korean and English or speak
Indonesian and English fluently. That's what
we called as billingualism.
9. Multilingualism
• The concept of multilingual or multilingual
refers to the act of using two or more
languages by individuals or communities
(Carson, 2016).
• The term “multilingual” refers to language
use, individual competence, or language
situations that exist across countries or
societies.
10. Multilingualism
• Language is always changing. We’ve seen that language changes
across space and across social group. Language also varies across
time. Generation by generation, pronunciations evolve, new words
are borrowed or invented, the meaning of old words drifts, and
morphology develops or decays.
• Indonesia is also the third bilingual country. Because the
population uses a combination of two languages to communicate.
In Indonesia, there are more than 700 languages that are used
daily, lo. Yep, this number comes from the many regional
languages in Indonesia.
11. Additional Info
How do you interact in a multilingual society?
In other words, in multilingual encounters, there are at
least three feasible modes of communication: using a
lingua franca, adopting the native language of the
addressee (an L2 language), or relying on receptive
competences with all speakers communicating in their
own language.
12. Question
What are the challenges to multilingualism in
today's world?
You might struggle to get along in monolingual
societies. In severe situations, being multilingual
could cause some people to become isolated from
their communities because there are viewed as being
an elitist
