2. Introduction
• Holding a master’s degree in civil engineering, Avinash Rachmale
serves as president and CEO of Detroit’s Lakeshore Engineering.
Avinash Rachmale gives back to the community by supporting a
wide range of initiatives, including a fellowship program for
underrepresented students in science at the University of Michigan-
Dearborn.
The university recently announced a major expansion to its
engineering programs. The College of Engineering and Computer
Science will introduce four new doctorate programs in Fall 2017 in
an effort to train more research and development engineers.
A new PhD in computer and information science allows students to
delve deeply into the fields of data science and management,
software engineering, and systems security.

3. University of Michigan
• Another new program in electrical and computer engineering is
designed to train students on the development of innovative
technologies related to signal processing, computer systems,
energy systems, and robotics.
The other two novel graduate programs focus on industrial systems
and mechanical sciences. The former looks at design, operational
processes, and ergonomics, while the latter focuses in the
intersection between mechanical engineering and materials
sciences.
All four of the new programs are heavily based in research and
designed to train students how to conduct their own studies and
ideally direct research and development efforts at organizations in a
variety of different fields.
