The document summarizes the crop calendar of the Barind Tract region in Bangladesh. It describes the main crops grown in each season - rabi crops like boro rice, mustard, chickpea and lentils in winter/spring; kharip-1 crops like aus rice and jute in summer; and kharip-2 crops like aman rice varieties, mungbean, and blackgram in late summer/fall. The crop calendar provides information on planting, growing and harvesting periods to farmers to help plan their agricultural activities and maximize production.
1. Acknowledgement:
Mostly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my Honorable course
teacher Dr. Mohammad Najmul Islam , Associate Professor, Dept. of
Geography and Environment, Pabna University of Science and Technology, for
giving us this opportunity to make a poster of crop calendar and give a
presentation in front of everyone via online platform.
Which is to increase our knowledge and also for giving us some useful tips for
this study.
Conclusions:
The stated above those are about the crop calendar of Barind Tract which
is shown the different seasonal stages of different crops.
It’s give an idea about expenditure and profit and overall planning for
maximizing crop production, land use, and economic return.
Barind Tract is a distinct uplifted agro-ecological zone in Bangladesh,
originally densely forested but with a long subsequent history of rainy
season, transplanted, puddled rice cultivation.
Barind Tract:
The Barind Tract is a distinctive physiographic unit comprising a
series of uplifted blocks of terraced land covering 8,720 km2 in
northwestern Bangladesh.
Situated between the floodplains of the Padma (known as the
Ganges in India) and the Jamuna rivers (the main channel of the
lower Brahmaputra).
Barind Tract, located in the North-West region of Bangladesh is
a drought prone water stressed area.
Spread over parts of the greater districts of Rajshahi, Dinajpur,
Rangpur, and Bogra of Bangladesh, and Maldah District of West
Bengal in India.
The Barind includes 773,000 ha in Bangladesh, of which
532,000 ha are cultivable (Riches, D Ed Harris, Johnson, & B Ed
Hardy, 2008).
Introduction :
Agriculture is the spinal column of the country and is
synonymous to the food security of the country
Bangladesh economy draws its main strength from agriculture
sector.
The sector contributes 19.10% to GDP (at current prices) and
employs 50.28% of the labour force.
Despite increase in the shares of fisheries, livestock, and
forestry, crop sub-sector alone accounts for 60.83% share of
agricultural GDP (BBS, 2008).
Characteristics of Barind tract:
Hard red soil.
Typical dry climate.
Semi arid and drought prone area.
Comparatively high temperature.
Less rainfall.
Max temp.(40 degree C) exceed in May.
Min temp.(6 degree C) in January.
Crop:
Crop is any plant product grown, harvested or collected for
human use.
Over 80 crops are grown worldwide, providing people with the
major part of their food and supplying fibers, construction
materials, pharmaceuticals, beverage, rubber, dyes and other
materials.
Crops grown for export are cash crops.
Crop Calendar:
A crop calendar helps in knowing the life cycle of different crops
and their cultural management practices.
Preparing different cropping structures.
Getting multiple cropping lists, seeds, fertilizers, implements,
and insecticides in time.
Obtaining an idea about expenditure and profit and overall
planning for maximizing crop production, land use, and
economic return.
Through this calendar farm laborers can effectively be engaged
to do farming activities.
This calendar also includes cultural operations of various crops
on planting/sowing time, growth period as well as harvesting
time.
