ACADEMIC PROJECT
Project Name: “Pneumatic Car Jack”
Team Size: 4
Duration: 6 Months
Role: Testing of Pneumatic Car Jack for various parameters including torsion tests, selection of material for
optimum results, selection of valves to deliver the correct pressure.
Synopsis: Successfully completed a project on Pneumatic Car Jack under the guidance of Mr. Austin Dinesh
D’Souza, senior lecturer, Department of Mechanical Engineering, NMAMIT. The project uses pneumatic force
to actuate the jack using a cylinder piston arrangement and mechanical links to lift the desired weight of the
car. The air is compressed by a compressor and is regulated using a regulator. The flow direction is controlled
using a directional valve. The forward and backward movement of the piston by the compressed air is
converted to vertical motion using a pair of scissor links. A required lift is achieved relative to the lateral
movement of the piston.
Training: Attended a 3-day training and certification on hydraulics and pneumatics from Rexroth Bosch
Center of Competence, Mangalore from 21st to 23rd December 2011. A 3 day training on Industrial
Automation Technology from Rexroth, Bosch Group in MITE-Bosch Rexroth Centre of Competence in
Automation Technology, Moodabidri. The training also included a brief introduction to hydraulics and
pneumatics used in industries. Basic parts of hydraulic and pneumatic systems were explained and practical
training was given as well.
4. Paper Presentation: Presented a seminar on “Ship Roll Damping Control”. A detailed analysis was presented
on what type of forces affects the movement of the ship apart from giving an analysis of rolling. An oversight
on principle of roll damping devices, initial developments along with the history as well as the latest
technology and innovations in this field was also provided.
